igya Posted September 5, 2008 #1 Posted September 5, 2008 What are you guys thinking the best idle speed is for the '85 VR. 800 just seems a bit high to me. How 'bout it?
StuD Posted September 5, 2008 #2 Posted September 5, 2008 Specs for warm engine is 1,000 +/-50 RPM:canada::canada:
Squidley Posted September 5, 2008 #3 Posted September 5, 2008 1000 rpm, I wouldn't go much lower than that as the oil pressure when it's hot isn't very good. The extra rpm keeps oil headed up top and will keep you that much more into the power range on takeoff.
BradT Posted September 6, 2008 #5 Posted September 6, 2008 I always double check with a volt meter and make sure it is charging slightly over 12v when all accessories are on and at idle. If this is above 1300-1400 rpm I would start cleaning and checking electrical connections. Brad

I'm so used to older twin bangers that I forgot that engines like these are a totally different animal. I guess I'll kick'er up another 100. Thanks guys, you've come through again!
Marcarl Posted September 6, 2008 #7 Posted September 6, 2008 Biggest issue is power for take off, if she idles too slow, sometime she will stall on you just when it is most inconvinent, like with another rider next to you or a Grey Hound bus coming up from the back side with all horns blaring.
