Buckeye Dave Posted September 3, 2008 #1 Posted September 3, 2008 I have been lurking here for a while soaking up info, seems like a great group of people, I traded in my 05 suzuki c-90t in mid july for a new 07 rsv, I have not got to ride it much because it has been in the dealer most of the time but i love the comfort and the storage of the bike so far, i have put 5,000 miles on my rsv so far and have had nothing but problems, so far my final drive went out on a trip, they had to completely change the whole unit, then my lower left leg guard cracked real bad, now it is back in the shop with 2 blown head gaskets. I put 25,000 trouble free miles on my c-90t in 2 years and hoping the bugs get worked out of my rsv so i can do the same with it. so far i have had to cancel 2 trips and 1 iron butt ride . did I make a mistake with purchasing my RSV? Thanks Dave
Freebird Posted September 3, 2008 #2 Posted September 3, 2008 Sorry to hear that you are having such problems. My '99 has never had a problem with head gaskets nor with the rear drive. I did crack the lower left shield and unfortunately, that is TOO common on these bikes. There are others here who have had some problems with the rear. It's not common but not completely unusual either. The head gasket problem seems to be isolated to the '07 model but should be find once repaired. Hope they get your issues resolved to your satisfaction. Most of us really love these bikes and have had few problems.
Bummer Posted September 3, 2008 #3 Posted September 3, 2008 "Did I make a mistake" is a hard question to answer. Most Ventures seem to be trouble free. Maybe an annoyance here or there, but overall a very sound design. On the other hand once in a while we see one come by with problems. Not that I'm superstitious or anything but I don't know how much I want to say about the amount of time mine has not spent at the dealer. I did have to get the bracket for the wind deflector on the front fork replaced under warranty. I went ahead and put the chrome ones on right after that anyway. And I did let them do the first maintenance. Other than that it's just been there for me to pick up tiny bits that I've stripped out or lost. Seat bolts leap to mind. I hope yours settles out and becomes as reliable as the rest.
Who Dey Posted September 3, 2008 #4 Posted September 3, 2008 Well you have certainly had your share of problems but i don't think that you made a bad choice by going with this bike because it is an awesome machine. Yamaha builds very reliable bikes and i believe that you have had some very unusual bad luck that is definitely not common with these bikes. I see that you are in Ohio, how close are you to Competition Accesories in Springfield? If your dealer can't get these bugs worked out i would take the bike there and let them look at it, they are a great dealership in my opinion. Sorry to hear about all of the bad luck you are having and i hope that you get your problems straightened out soon. Good luck!
V7Goose Posted September 3, 2008 #5 Posted September 3, 2008 Welcome to the group. I'm really sorry to hear about the problems you have had with the new bike. It certainly is not common, especially when so new. The head gasket thing is unique to early 2007 models - there is a tech service bulletin relating to specific serial numbers only where the factory discovered they were ton torquing them correctly. I too had the lower left cowling crack, but that wasn't until about 30,000 miles, and they replaced it under warranty without hesitation. I wish you luck on many miles of trouble-free ownership after they finally get that stuff cleared away! Goose

Good luck! funny you should say that, they are most of the problem, they forgot the gear oil in the final drive after they replaced the o -ring that was leaking the day i drove the bike home after the purchase and they are the ones who did not do the TSB for the head gasket before delivery ....Dave

They did leave the key on after they serviced the bike last week but they gave me a new battery. I also have a Suzuki M109R and am taking it in tommorrow for an oil change. I'm not trying to take up for them but as you know we all make mistakes and sometimes they are bad ones, and i am sure they are no different. They seem like a good bunch of guys though to me and i am betting that they will take care of your problem. I have dealt with a few dealers and they by far seem to have it together more than the others i have dealt with. Good luck on getting your bike fixed. There's nothing worse then having your bike down and not being able to ride on a nice summer day.

Your beef is more with the dealer than with the bike it sounds like. Is this true? All the problems you mentioned sound like, with this new info., they are a break down in dealer service.

I guess you are correct but IMO the dealer is a direct reflection of the manufacturer if they allow them to sell the product? when they sent me away with the bike i went home , put it on the lift to check it out, the tires were 20 lbs low on air, mirrors were so loose they almost fell off on the trip home and the rear seal on the diff was dumping oil, brought it back, it stayed there for a week waiting on parts, then went back and got it, took a 800 mile ride and the diff went out due to lack of gear oil, i thought i was hearing "the whine" turns out it was the gears in the diff screaming LOL the new dealer i took it to called me and asked how long i rode it with no gear oil and i told them, ummm about 800 miles i guess thats when it was at the last dealer LOL
gibvel Posted September 3, 2008 #10 Posted September 3, 2008 Well, hopefully, the new dealer will get everything straightened out and you'll have many, many trouble free miles!!
Buckeye Dave Posted September 3, 2008 Author #11 Posted September 3, 2008 Thanks toveryone for the welcome and support, the bike is now at a different dealer waiting on oil samples to come back, they already have the head gaskets and want to make sure the oil is ok due to the bike over heating the day the gaskets blew, if all is swell with the oil i should have the bike back friday and will be able to do my next iron butt ride of 1,500 miles in 36 hrs in the next few weeks...................Dave
1BigDog Posted September 3, 2008 #12 Posted September 3, 2008 Welcome Dave. I guess you see why many of us do our own maintenance on our bikes. Finding a reliable dealer who takes the time to practice good customer care and relations and can fix a bike too is hard to find these days.

noahzark Posted September 3, 2008 #14 Posted September 3, 2008 . . . the dealer i am using now seams to really have great mechanics that care and are very serious about their business OK, Dave, for those of us in the area who currently use Competition Accessories, who is your current dealer, in case we need to find another one? Thanks.

Takin' those rides kinda easy, ain'tcha? My wife and I did 1,150 two-up in 18 hours the first week of December last year on our Venture, and I routinely do about 860 over to my brother's place in Georgia in 13 hours, but I don't waste any time stopping for food while I am on the road either! They are pretty easy to do long rides on in my book. Goose Oh, I agree with the earlier post - I wouldn't be blaming the machine for a pin-head in the service department!
BradT Posted September 4, 2008 #16 Posted September 4, 2008 Dave Welcome and hope you find a dealer to get it right and start enjoying your new ride. And you made the right choice on the bike and also a good choice for stopping in here. Does not take long to get hooked on this site. BRad
Guest pkksr Posted September 4, 2008 #17 Posted September 4, 2008 I have an 07 RSV and the only problem I have had is the clicking in the rear end which is common because the factory didn't put enough grease around the spleens. Other than that the bike is great!! Very comfortable to ride with all that I need for accessories. I have trouble finding stuff. I did buy Bub Slip on Mufflers which I really like, new Kuryaken grips and K&N filters. Great bike with lots of power!! Enjoy!!
Buckeye Dave Posted September 4, 2008 Author #18 Posted September 4, 2008 OK, Dave, for those of us in the area who currently use Competition Accessories, who is your current dealer, in case we need to find another one? Thanks. Joes cycle shops on dixie drive in dayton, he is a yammi and triumph dealer
noahzark Posted September 5, 2008 #19 Posted September 5, 2008 Joes cycle shops on dixie drive in dayton, he is a yammi and triumph dealer Thanks. I've had a couple dealings with them and they seem like good people. One thing that surprised me was a spare key, blank and all, for $4. That's as cheap as I've had ANY key made lately. Have been thinking of using them for maintenance, too. Appreciate the endorsement. By the way, Comp Accessories has a fairly new service manager. Tony used to be there and he could be counted on to make sure it was done right. Don't know if the new guy is worse or if it's just a coincidence. Do know they have a large selection of new and used bikes--a little over priced but they will deal. Thanks again.
Bob Myers Posted September 5, 2008 #20 Posted September 5, 2008 (edited) I did a 1332 miler in 21 hours (part of my ride to Salt Lake City) a couple weeks ago. people ask me constantly,, why? I guess if I need to explain they wouldn't understand, if they understand then I don't need to explain. So, whenever you decide to do that, call me, I want to do it again.
