SaltyDawg Posted August 30, 2008 #1 Posted August 30, 2008 Does anybody know if the front wheel bearings are a sealed unit or do they need to be packed? Thanks in advance.
Steve S Posted August 30, 2008 #2 Posted August 30, 2008 Salty Dawg. I checked the repair manual and it looks like they front wheel bearing are sealed ball bearings. They shouldn't need any maintance, just check them every tire change to make sure one isn't going bad.

Salty, I never truly trust a sealed anything so what I usually do when I replace the front tire is to inject a little black moly lube under the seal into the bearing area with a fine needle point tip which snaps into the end of the grease gun. You wont damage the seal if done properly. I usually just "feel" for an opening between the bearings with the needle and give it a squirt.
jrange Posted August 16, 2009 #6 Posted August 16, 2009 I finished a short 150 mile ride today and about a mile from my house I heard and felt a click through the grips. I immediately slowed down to about 15mph and tried to listen closely and at random intervals between 5 and 30 seconds I'd hear a crunch, or several clicks and crunches, basically a really short clatter, and feel them too - all through my hands. I'm guessing bearings, but was wondering if anyone knew of anything else it could be? From the sound, I would think possibly transmission, but I'd expect to feel that in my butt and legs - not my hands.... Thanks!

Best thing is to put the bike up on the jack and spin the wheel with a cocked ear listening carefully.. at least you'd know what it might not be..
