Last time to see Delta Queen.

Today was the last time for the Delta Queen to dock at his home port of Cincinnati.

Here are some photos for those who are interested.

Evidently, it is to become a hotel somewhere.

We saw her up close in St. Paul a few years ago. She and the Mississippi Queen and a few others made it up here for a big week celebration on St. Paul's river front.

 

We've always wanted to take a vacation on her, but it's pretty darn expensive. I hope they are planning a replacement for her.

i think thats the one i got run off of in hannibal, mo. stepped on board to ask a question and was asked to kindly get off. if it's got a calliope on the top deck it's the one. it docks at hannibal all the time.

I suppose for now the Mississippi Queen is the replacement, but we are talking history here.

We never were able to take a cruise because it is too expensive for our tastes too. However, I still would of liked to have gone on a cruise down to New Orleans just to say I did.

I guess I understand the government butting in on this, but as long as the boat was maintained properly, I think it could have gone for a few more years.

Wow, that is truly the beginning of the end for an era. Watched the Delta Queen and "that other boat", you know the one from Louisville, do the "tall stacks race" many years ago. What an awesome sight ,sound and smell fest that was. Oh, in that last picture, the one where you can see lots of people milling around on top deck, guess who, yep thats right, thats not me amongst any of those people, I cannot afford the fare either.

She is a grand older lady and hate to see her leave the cruise world. I had many clients travel on her over the years and totally enjoyed the history and charm of her.

There is a cruise out there for every budget and lifestyle.

I looked her up and saw some interesting history on her. It was originally built at the Clyde River Shipyard in Scotland. Father used to tell me stories of ships being built there and he worked there as a ship dismantler he was young. It was disassembled and shipped to California. Now the Scottish Parlement is looking to aid in the Saving of this ship. I dont think it will be scraped. I would look for it to become a Museum here or in Scotland to the mighty ships. I also dont think you will ever see these Paddleships and their sisters disappear. They may build new ones as replicas with updated and better engines but they will be a fixture.

Yes Scotty, I read that same history. That is very interesting that you have a connection with the Delta Queen, who would have ever thought.

I think that is really powerful that Scotland was involved in trying to save the ship.

I went to the last tall stacks and took my kids to see those boats, they would be great to do a long cruise on. I wonder were she is going to go now? I wouldnt mind spending a night or two on her if they make her a hotel.

Yes I would love to spend the night on one too, however I think I would like it more on the Ohio River. Actually, my mother told me about the Island Queen that we used to have to take passengers from downtown Cincinnati to our Coney Island up river. I do not remember what year she told me it happened, but it completely burnt up. It probably would have been even an older paddle wheel boat than the Delta Queen.

Theres a stearn wheeler festival next weekend in Maryetta,ohio.

Thank you for letting me know that, we nay just ride up there to see it. I never knew that they had a festival like that. We have one called Tall Stacks that they do every 4 years along the Ohio. Boats come from way down the Mississippi. It is a photographers delight.
