kludlum Posted August 24, 2008 #1 Posted August 24, 2008 I have a 2007 RSTD with 900 miles. This weekend I changed out the handlebars to Flanders and replaced both cables with Barnett Braided stainless steel with the two inch added. Also replaced both front brakes and clutch with braided lines. The most difficult part was tearing into the area where the throttle cables and cruise come together. When I took it apart of course everything popped out at once. So putting it together was a guess. My problem is I got everything put back together and took it out for a trial run. The first time I went out the cruise control light came on and the set light came on but the throttle was like it was stuck but would not keep the speed and then the set light went out. Went back home and tore into it again and pulled the cable around the pulley the other direction and this time the set light didn't even come on. I tore into it two more times turning the the pulley both ways again and still the same things. I know that I still have some air in the clutch line, but ran out of fluid. Was wondering if anybody has any idea what I have done. And yes I did put the spring back in each time. Sorry for being so long, but figured I would try to cover everything. Thanks in advance. Kevin
pegscraper Posted August 24, 2008 #2 Posted August 24, 2008 Probably what happened is you didn't get the top cable pulley back in right and it won't engage the bottom pulley. Look into the junction box again and make sure the teeth on the pulleys are on the correct side of each other. You can hold things in place and check it out to make sure its working right before putting the junction box back together.
kludlum Posted August 24, 2008 Author #3 Posted August 24, 2008 I checked it again. If I have the cruise cable come straight out and wrap it around the pulley I am able to put it against the tab, but when you pull the throttle, the cruise cable gets a lot of slack. I started it and the throttle stayed on high idle. If I move it the where it isn't against the notch then the cruise light comes on, but the set light wouldn't light up. I then pulled the cable through and wrapped it the other direction, which the cable then bends. Unable to put it to where the tabs engage because the cruise cable won't move. When I ride it this way the cruise light lights and the set light comes on, the cruise doesn't set the speed but the throttle won't move until the set light goes out. I need to know which way the cruise cable wraps either toward the carbs side or toward the throttle side. I can't find anything that shows a diagram. Thanks, kevin
pegscraper Posted August 25, 2008 #4 Posted August 25, 2008 I have one on the bench that I could easily get a pic for you. I'm not sure how the cruise cable could even be put in the other direction. When you pull on the cruise cable, the throttle cables should move as if you were twisting the grip. But when you twist the throttle grip, the cruise cable should not move.
kludlum Posted August 27, 2008 Author #5 Posted August 27, 2008 Thanks, I figured it out finally. Probably shouldn't be doing my own work. Kevin
Al Bates Posted August 27, 2008 #6 Posted August 27, 2008 Check and make sure that the cables are clamp tight and in the right position in the junction box if there to far forward the cable will hit and drag or jam the pulley. I found this on a friends bike.
