arbee_11 Posted August 24, 2008 #1 Posted August 24, 2008 Ok,ok.. It's probably a stupid question, but as I have said before, I have electrical knowledge and not much mechanical, so I would rather ask a dumb question than risk messing something up. I just went thru the seafoam proceedure and do not wish to start the bike up until I put a new filter in it, but after locating that filter I see that I cannot even get a finger in there, let alone tools to get it removed/replaced. The metal band around the current filter seems to be bolted from underneath and the fuel line (towards the engine) looks like it would be lost, or at least very difficult to retrieve if it slips down into the abyss. Can someone please give me an easy step-by-step fuel filter removal proceedure? Is removing this a delicate surgery with long needle nose pliers and lots of swear words part of the deal? Thanks Muchly... Johnnie

Turn off fuel at valve on right side of bike Remove left side cover & unbolt fuel pump mount Remove fuel pump & let dangle over the side Filter mounting bracket is held in place by one screw above inlet hose Remove screw & inlet hose from filter You can now pull the filter mount out for filter change. Install in reverse order.
hipshot Posted August 24, 2008 #3 Posted August 24, 2008 while you have the filter off. use a good flashlight and really inspect the fuel line running back to the petcock. mine was almost "squeezed shut", by the bendable support clip, in the center section of the fuel line. just jt
arbee_11 Posted August 25, 2008 Author #4 Posted August 25, 2008 See, I never would have thought of removing the fuel pump. Thanks again! And I will check that fuel line too. Johnnie (Keizer, Oregon)
mtman Posted August 25, 2008 #5 Posted August 25, 2008 BTW Johnnie, if you need another one, you can use a NAPA 3007. It's a lot cheaper than one from a stealer
hillrider Posted August 25, 2008 #6 Posted August 25, 2008 Or you can go to O'Reilly's auto parts and get the clear racing filter ("bout the size of your thumb). There's room for it in front of the battery.
