BoomerCPO Posted August 23, 2008 #1 Posted August 23, 2008 Is it safe to put a battery maintainer on this type battery during the Winter months? Comments welcomed! Regards.........Boomer
GeorgeS Posted August 23, 2008 #2 Posted August 23, 2008 I would say, OK, but make sure its Fully Charged when you put in storage. ie. charge at 6 Amp Rate, for about 6 hours. Voltage should settle in at about 12.6 to 12.8 volts after charging.
Squeeze Posted August 23, 2008 #3 Posted August 23, 2008 Doesn't make sense. Charge it fully, let the Winter come and recharge just before you give the Bike the first Start after the Winter. The Odessy has not that much of inner Resistance, so the Drain over the Winter will be not that much anyway.
Moped Posted August 23, 2008 #4 Posted August 23, 2008 It is ok to float or trickle charge Odyssey battery. Due to plate size however the float has to be approx. 13.6 volts. Many stand alone float chargers output is lower. This is also the reason they require 6 amp charger for normal charge because you need approx. 14.7 volts. Can't tell you if float charge helps much on Odessey batteries but I am a firm believer in float charging as I replaced my original Yausa battery from my 99 RSV two months ago. It also works with my lawn tractor.
bongobobny Posted August 23, 2008 #5 Posted August 23, 2008 I forgot to hok up my float charger last fall, and in the spring still had a reasonable charge. Couple of hours or less on a normal charger put it max charge... If you read about the Odessy you will find it was designed for sub zero applications for the military.
