heatonmt Posted August 22, 2008 #1 Posted August 22, 2008 Well here we go again 7530 mile on the back tire still showing tread vacation coming in to weeks planing on about 3000 miles should I pay for the rush mount of a tire or go for it. Will the stock tire go 10500 miles or will I find myself on the side of the road saying XXXX I knew better then that. Or roadkill saying what the heck is wrong with you dummy.
Squidley Posted August 22, 2008 #2 Posted August 22, 2008 Thats a tough call and really only 1 you can make. I would check the depth with a tread gauge and see where you stand. It's a crapshoot really, if you can get a tire, do it and be done with it....no worries.
flb_78 Posted August 22, 2008 #3 Posted August 22, 2008 OR call someplace 1500 miles ahead and have them order you a tire and about the 1500 mile mark, stop at said place and have them change the tire. Otherwise, change it now. It's almost always cheaper to change it on your terms instead of begging a place to do it.
heatonmt Posted August 23, 2008 Author #5 Posted August 23, 2008 where is a good place to shop on line for tires.
Squidley Posted August 23, 2008 #6 Posted August 23, 2008 where is a good place to shop on line for tires. Southwest Moto http://www.swmototires.com/
mbrood Posted August 23, 2008 #7 Posted August 23, 2008 I would change it now and get a few miles on it (scruffed up and ready) so that when you START your trip... you are only looking ahead and with a smile. I can't see a reason to take a headache on a vacation.
bugfish69 Posted August 23, 2008 #8 Posted August 23, 2008 Yours is better than mine was when I left for Asheville a couple of weeks ago. I knew mine was low, but thought I would finish it off on the trip an get a new one after. I had no idea how fast they dissapear at the end of their life. I looked when I got home and there was no tread left. It was shocking and a little scary. I really thougt I had more that 1400 miles left on them. I just ordered from SW moto Monday morning prior to their opening and the tires were delivered in VA on Wednesday. Great delivery although there is no communication from them after the sale; kinda like a black hole.
BOO Posted August 23, 2008 #9 Posted August 23, 2008 Like Squid said you have to make up your own mind. I just did a 2500 miles on a tire that already had 23,000 or so on it. Got to admit though I didn't look at it when I started back home because I didn't want to see how slick it might be. The picture below is a typical tire that I change out, just have to be careful in the wet. Your tire looks great but again that's just me. Heck I might put your tire on and run it a while. LOL. Good Luck, Jerry
Snarley Bill Posted August 23, 2008 #10 Posted August 23, 2008 i would get a new tire. go with avon venoms with the narrow front tire. if you don't buy the tire from the dealer they may not mount it or charge you double to do it. i mount my own tires and buy them on line. the venoms with the narrow front tire will make it feel like a totally different bike, mostly at parking lot speeds. bill
VTirelli Posted August 23, 2008 #11 Posted August 23, 2008 Peace of mind rules. I changed my first set out at 10,000 and had plenty of tread left. I just knew I didn't want to worry while I was 1000 miles from home. Love my Avons, and will change them out at 10,000 not matter how good they look. Just my 2 cents
cecdoo Posted August 23, 2008 #12 Posted August 23, 2008 Yep, order the Avons, but I think I am gonna do alot better than 10k on my set, already have 8k on them and they still look great. Craig

I would probably change them when I got back. I'm kinda like Boo, though not quite as bad. However, if its gonna eat at you the whole time then definetely change it. If you get stranded along the road Teri can have a ride, but you are walking buddy!

I am totally sold on Avon's and the smaller tire. The front size on the Avon Venom is MT90B16/74H
Ponch Posted August 23, 2008 #16 Posted August 23, 2008 Mine had 10,000 miles on it at McKinney Maintenance Day. The tread was already flattened out and looked much like yours. I changed it when I got home and really noticed a BIG difference in handling. Ponch
heatonmt Posted August 23, 2008 Author #17 Posted August 23, 2008 Well read everything that was said here, took the bike for a ride to get it hot came home changed the oil. I just keep looking at that tire and telling myself that thing will make it 3000 miles. then I stopped and thought, OK going on a 3000 mile ride the cost of gas, rooms , food and ticket to get into the ball parks I want to stop at. Why am I standing here looking at the cost of a tire saying it should make it? so there I went off to dealer to see if he could get me in next week he said yes tires are on the way, I will have two good spares and a lot of piece of mind. Avon Venoms Rear 150/90/HB 15 and front MT90HB 16 .Went with smaller tire on front hope I like it dealer had no problem put it on as a mater of fact he said I was making the right choice from what he has heard. :7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]:

Change it out and it's one less thing you have to worry about. It's a vacation...take it.
BigBear Posted August 27, 2008 #19 Posted August 27, 2008 Avon Venoms Rear 150/90/HB 15 and front MT90HB 16 .Went with smaller tire on front hope I like it dealer had no problem put it on as a mater of fact he said I was making the right choice from what he has heard. Pardon my ignorance, but "What exactly does a smaller front tire do for the ride?"
KiteSquid Posted August 27, 2008 #20 Posted August 27, 2008 By smaller I assume you mean narrower front tire. it makes the curve of the contact patch a smaller diameter, so with the same lean angle you should get a tighter radius turn...... but at the cost of some freeway speed handling. I will NOT give up my at speed handling for an improvement at parking lot speed, so I bought a copy of Ride Like a Pro on DVD and am leaning HOW to ride!!!!
BuddyRich Posted August 27, 2008 #21 Posted August 27, 2008 I have an tendency not to change things on the bike before or during a long trip. If its put back together wrong you don't want to find out 100 miles from nowhere.
heatonmt Posted August 28, 2008 Author #22 Posted August 28, 2008 I have an tendency not to change things on the bike before or during a long trip. If its put back together wrong you don't want to find out 100 miles from nowhere.I know what you mean I gave the idea some thought before have new tires put on. I am going to take big blue out for 2 our three hundred miles this weekend to make sure all is well before taking off next weekend. Hay seeing that the narrow is only a difference of a little over 3/4" does it make that big of difference at highway speeds I would not think so. How has it and how does it acted on the highway.
Guest Boomerbiker Posted August 28, 2008 #23 Posted August 28, 2008 I have to chuckle at our never ending tire discussions. They are, after all, one of the more critical components on our bikes. A week before my 4,197 mile ride from Coldwater, MI to Glacier National Park, I stopped by a good friend's house (a state police lieutenant) and he said, "Dude, that rear tire needs a change." I didn't think so, but on further reflection, knowing it would be a long ride, I thought why take a chance. There was some center tread left on the Avon with 13,600 miles, but the more I thought about it, there was no sense in not changing it out. So, I did, and after riding through a monsoon in Iowa, I am glad I did. The front smaller Avon still has plenty of tread after 17,000 miles and I suspect it will last until the next rear tire change. The point is why take a chance on something as basic as a tire on a motorcycle. When in doubt, CHANGE IT.
BuddyRich Posted August 28, 2008 #24 Posted August 28, 2008 I had both the leveling links and the smaller front tire. It was too light in the front like that at highway speeds. Went back to the standard size front
Dieseldawg Posted August 29, 2008 #25 Posted August 29, 2008 When switching to Avon Venoms should you run the bias tire front and rear?Or is there any benefit in running the radial on the rear? My riding style leans a little to the sportier side and I,m looking for traction and handling in the curves.
