muffinman Posted August 22, 2008 #1 Posted August 22, 2008 After some thinking and trial and error I finaly figured out how to move the trunk up and back on the MK2 like I did on the MK1 bikes. I will get Mini to post the pics of my scoot with the trunk in the factory position and the moved position. I unfortunatly cant make the parts at work do to the policies of my current place of employment but I can give you the plans for them as I have made them so anyone that wants can make there own. here it goes you will need 4 1 inch wide by 3 1/2 inch strips of metal I used 301 1/4 hard Stainless .072 thick but am going to remake them out of .100 for rigidity and for the other 2 you will need 1 3/4 by 3 1/4 pieces. I will enclose I bent all of the pieces to form a Z with one end longer then the other so measure from one end one inch,and flip the metal mark it at two inches so you will have a Z the Z should measure one inch flat one inch riser and one and 1/2 on the one inch wide peices and one and 1/4 on the 1 3/4 inch wide pieces. Drill 1/4 inch holes to use the original fasteners and use grade 8 or better bolts to attach the trunk to the long end of the brackets. After Mini gets all of the pics resized she will post them on this thread. Good luck and I hope you have the same success I did with the relocation. as Mini thinks this will help make her more comfy going down the road. Jeff

I have a black plastic strip about 1 1/2" tall running around the base of the trunk to hide brackets and fill in space. This was on the bike when I bought it. Looks like a kit of some sort. I'll check the pic in my profile to see if it is noticeable. If not, I'll see if I can get a pic taken tonight and post. May give Jeff some ideas.

I though the Mark II had a few more mounting spots to support than 4 bolts. Maybe it is just my mind when I look under the trunk. I want to get a bit more seat room too. The Corbin is set back further than the original seat. I could actually use 2-3 inches. At that point, the backrest would be even with the rear edge of the Corbin. JB

JB The Corbin passenger space behind the backrest on my '91 is really limited. Looks like something that needs to be looked into. I don't really need a higher trunk, just about 2-3 inches more room aft. I wonder if I can get away with just making flat bracket extensions??

He gives the sizes for each. First the 4 then the 2 that are going to be different. Margaret

Make it thick enough to recess the bolt heads and studs etc. Sure would be easier than the rewelding and rechroming trick. Something to try after I get the new shoes on tomorrow. JB

JB And of course JB you're gonna post the measurements here so I won't have to go thru all that nipping and tucking... I do like the idea of using a thicker aluminum... 1/2" maybe... and counter boring so the trunk will fit flush to the bracket....

Might make for another VR.org closet industry item... As a test bed I did build a brace for the 86 and installed it before i went to Salt Lake. Not knowing what I really wanted to end up with I made it extra thick, app 2" and drilled it on top for mounting driving lights, I'll get a picture of it and send it to you. I need to take it off and thin it down about 3/4 inch, and put a radius on the rear. I do believe it helped considerably at road speed, but not much at parking lot speed.
lonestarmedic Posted August 24, 2008 #15 Posted August 24, 2008 Bob- I looked at my brace with the same idea. How did it work out? I will let you know as I progress on the relocator brackets. Condor- I spent the night at the E.R. with my daughter, so I am a bit behind the power curve on the trunk project. Need to get ready to ride East Texas next weekend. Preliminary inspection has an idea of 2 bars from the forward to the rear mounts with a crossbar in the back to grab the other mounts. Plus would be a place on the crossbar to hang a 3rd brake light. Ideas for the area between the seat and trunk include an extra cushion, a pad bolted to the turo pack, and a spot for too pouch etc. Daughter is ok. Just a mean strain of strep throat. Shot her temp up and was causing lower back pain due to the fever and shivering. Thought it might be the kidneys so I took her in. Spent 10pm to 4:30 am sitting and waiting. JB

Bob Myers Posted September 2, 2008 #17 Posted September 2, 2008 I found that to move the trunk rearward any at all you either cut the 2 center supports off and lengthen them or raise the trunk up. I opted to raise the trunk and move rearward by 2", as Condor and I have exchanged numerous emails on this I concur with his thoughts, it aint quite as nice looking as I hoped it would be. But, there is a lot more room there now for passenger comfort. I may cut the tabs off and reweld them next

It is also the only year that has the leather pouch on the lower trunk under the seat backrest. There is about 3 inches or more between the back of the seat and my trunk where the pouch sits in.
