gibvel Posted May 14, 2007 #1 Posted May 14, 2007 Change the bulbs in the OEM Passing lamps and is there a specific bulb type that goes in this lamp? Was looking at the PIAA site and that got me wondering.
Marcarl Posted May 14, 2007 #2 Posted May 14, 2007 There's a chrome ring around the glass part that holds the glass to the chrome bucket. Remove the ring and catch the glass as it may fall out. It may also be a little sticky so you may nee to pry it off once the chrome ring is removed. Pull out the glass and in the back of the light you'll find a bulb fitting, push down, twist, and remove and there is you're bulb. Your fitting will probably have a 3 prong on it so that you can only put it back one way. Don't know the number of the bulb, but it only takes a few minutes to check and different lights may have different bulbs anyways. If you have eyebrows on your lights this is how you reinstall: Put light into holder top side up (writing should be straight up) install chrome ring losely with screw just started enough to keep the ring from falling off, slide eyebrow under ring starting at the split in the bottom, slide eyebrow into position and tighten chrome ring. Hope this helps.
gibvel Posted May 14, 2007 Author #3 Posted May 14, 2007 Carl, is this for the 2nd gen passing lamps? Sounds like it is but I'm wondering how you would know this since you have a 1st gen, and all.
bowa1 Posted May 14, 2007 #4 Posted May 14, 2007 What Karl said won't work on a 2nd gen. No need to remove the chrome ring (actually you can't with the fairing still on, it's not screwed on but pressed on with tabs that are crimped over the bucket.) You either need to get to the bulb from the back side, fishing your hand in there down by the headlight adjuster knob, or remove the front fairing and have easy access to the bulb. I haven't had to change my bulb yet but when I do I'll take the fairing off to do so. Larry
gibvel Posted May 14, 2007 Author #5 Posted May 14, 2007 Okay, let me clarify here. I'm wondering about the Passing Lamps, NOT the headlight.
FreezyRider Posted May 14, 2007 #6 Posted May 14, 2007 The stock passing lamps are a Sealed Beam lamp. You cannot change just the "Bulb", you change the entire lamp unit. Take the chrome ring off and the lamp drops out. It is connected with 2 wires that screw onto the connectors on the lamp. There are some aftermarket lamp assemblies available that use a replaceable halogen H3 bulb, I cannot remember who makes them but I'll try to find the source. Here is what I put in mine: http://www.jpcycles.com/productdetail.aspx?PID=310-144&cs=Harley&GID=f50291fb-213e-4385-a2cb-e6db00522737&store=&page=&search= They are brighter and don't cost an arm and a leg like the conversion kits do. These are also a one-piece lamp like the originals but are halogen.

When I bought mine there seemed to be a variety of choices, so I guess it depends on what you have, Go with what you have and what info is given here, looks like I may be a wayyyy out to lunch.
gibvel Posted May 14, 2007 Author #9 Posted May 14, 2007 Thanks for the help guys. I think FreezyRider is probably the closest to what I've got so I think I'll look into those. Guess I really wanted to know if it was sealed beam or a bulb and how you go about changing the thing if it was a bulb.
bowa1 Posted May 15, 2007 #10 Posted May 15, 2007 Okay, let me clarify here. I'm wondering about the Passing Lamps, NOT the headlight OOPS, my bad... sorry, I didn't read it right:confused24:
juggler Posted May 15, 2007 #11 Posted May 15, 2007 Just about any 4 1/2" lamp will work. I bought some from atlantalightbulbs.com. Or are they 3 1/2? I can't remember right now.
