heatonmt Posted August 17, 2008 #1 Posted August 17, 2008 I bought a leather gas cap cover from Yamaha that in there catalog. it came in Fri. when I went to put it on it so small it took the owner to put it on and took him 5 min. he said it would stretch with time. I tried to take it off and put on myself today came off a no go putting back on. Does anyone out there have one of these and are they that hard to put on? :7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]::7_6_3[1]:
KeithR Posted August 17, 2008 #2 Posted August 17, 2008 I didn't have the one from Yamaha but had one made...it was a little snug going off and on but stretched after awhile. I would suggest that you put a leash on it somehow. Mine decided to take flight while traveling to the rally in Kitchener. I'm having another one made and told him to add a piece that I can tuck in under the plastic cover somehow. I know I sure miss mine...the gas cap reflection sure is irritating. Keith

Keith The reflection is the reason I bought this thing. Know I will have to go back to my cut down painted black Kuze can cooler it works and dont look to bad.
1BigDog Posted August 17, 2008 #4 Posted August 17, 2008 Yep, that little cap is an art to install once its off. It will stretch out over time and even though I have had mine now for 3 years it still gives me fits sometimes. Dont try to install it with gloves on.....start at the bottom and loop one end under the cap, then slowly bring it up equally on both sides then deftly tuck it in over the top...almost like putting a sock on your foot. Yep, theres a procedure for everything I guess..LOL:doh:
robbitybob Posted August 17, 2008 #5 Posted August 17, 2008 I have one of those rascals and while it is a hassle to put on I wouldn't want to ride without it. Try putting some leather conditioner on it and then put it on. It is kinda like a new pair of boots, tight at first but in time - ahhhhh! Don't give up.
ahoutzer Posted August 17, 2008 #6 Posted August 17, 2008 I use one full time. I can take it off and put it on even with winter gauntlets on. It was more difficult at first than it is now, but it has always been doable, and it is worth it to get that glare off of the windshield.
Crash Posted August 17, 2008 #7 Posted August 17, 2008 Yea, I have one from Yamaha and it was tough at first to put in on, but eventually it gets easier.
heatonmt Posted August 17, 2008 Author #8 Posted August 17, 2008 Well after reading everyone post. I said to myself, self get off your behind and get out there and try this again You are right start it on the bottom work up and it will go on. Thanks to all I am sure it will get easier as time goes. PS the cut down can holder painted black does not look to bad and is a tight fit. I cut it 1.500 inch tall. If someone is looking for a chip way that does work.
Leo Anderson Posted August 17, 2008 #9 Posted August 17, 2008 try the fur of a earmuff. The woman will like to feel it.
ahoutzer Posted August 18, 2008 #10 Posted August 18, 2008 try the fur of a earmuff. The woman will like to feel it., I would never have thought of that. We don't have earmuffs down here!
hig4s Posted August 18, 2008 #11 Posted August 18, 2008 .the gas cap reflection sure is irritating. Keith I just took a heavy rubber band and sewed it into a round piece of black denim.
Guest Dandy1 Posted August 18, 2008 #12 Posted August 18, 2008 I had the same problem, I cut the elastic off mine and it fits just fine. Still a little snug but at least you can get it on now.
rumboogy Posted May 21, 2010 #13 Posted May 21, 2010 Here's what a buddy did for me...and I like it A LOT. Wally
Eck Posted May 21, 2010 #15 Posted May 21, 2010 About 5 years ago at the Vogel I installed about 25 gas cap covers. They were silver dollar Concho coins. In other words, not real silver dollars, but you would never know if I hadn't told you. My bike was the first one I did, then Freebird's was the second one..I still have mine and it is now on my Goldwing covering up a knob that opens the glove box. Everyone who sees it always asks me why I have a silver dollar on my bike. Out of all the ones I installed on members bikes every one of them were showing the tail side of the coin The WINGS..My bike was the only one showing the head side.. In my profile, in my bike photos, there is one picture of my RSV that you can barely see the coin in.
Bummer Posted May 21, 2010 #16 Posted May 21, 2010 How about soaking it, putting it on, then letting it dry? Since it's leather shouldn't it stretch when wet then shrink to fit as it dries?
ediddy Posted May 21, 2010 #17 Posted May 21, 2010 I bought the yamaha cover 4 years ago. At first it was hard to get on after a few times I got the hang of it and can put it on with no problem. It's hard to explain how it figured how to put it on but here it goes. I put one side over the gas cap and hold it in place with my left thumb and index finger. While holding one side on I just go around the edge with my other hand and it goes right on. Kinda like putting a tire on a rim. You start one edge and then go around.
