Things have been slow where I work. I worked in a kitchen cabinet door manufacturing facility, and with the housing market being so bad, our orders are way down. After just about 11 years with the same company and working 60 to 70 hours a week, I have been using vacation time to try to get my 40 hrs. a week for some time now.

I have applied at a number of different places but at 56 years old it seems not to many places want to hire you. I had put an application in with Case New Holand and was called in for an interview, and hired on the spot, of course had to wait for the background check, criminal history check and a ua, (drug check), to come back and then I was call and will be starting work on the 25th of this month. It will be an assemble position and a small cut in pay but at least I will be getting 40 hours a week and more and they have good benefits. Job is in Fargo, about 70 miles from home so will be staying there all week and be coming home on weekends. I have family in Fargo so have a place to stay. Will find a place to live closer to work after our son graduates from school, 2 years left.

Lots of people I worked with didn't have any vacation saved up and are unable to pay their bills, at least I had some money saved and vacation to use and have been able to meet my bills, savings has been taking a big hit and will take a while to get back on track.

I'm really glad to hear some good news. :) I understand about finding a good job when you get above that 50 year old mark. I went through that a few years ago and was lucky to find a company that actually prefers experienced folks. I am a bit tired of all the travel that I have to do but I think I'm pretty much stuck with it now. I have a good job with a great company and finding something as good without the travel at 53 years old would be very difficult. I am very happy for you and hope that it turns out to be a fantastic job for you.

That is good news. I'm 56 and have went through two down sizings in the last seven years. Unemployment is a scary position to be in, especially with a family to provide for. Good luck in your new career.

Hey John,

Congrats on the new job!

You are very lucky to have family in the town where you will be working. I recently left Lockheed-Martin after 20+ years for a job a lot closer to home as well. I was traveling 45 miles each way. The work is harder, the hours are longer, by I am saving a ton on gas! I wish you all the best on your new job!!

Best Wishes,

Earl and Jean

Way to go, John. I also know how tough it is to find a good job at our ages. I have one now but I never know when it could end.

After Katrina hit and the gas and fuel prices skyrocted, I had to give up my job of 18 yrs as a contract operator............I was 55 years old, and had to go out and find a job. I was resigned to finding a job that started out at about 8-9 dollars an hour but after my 2nd application was put out, I got a job with a mfg of alum doors that paid pretty good starting wage, I was lucky as the manager of the plant likes hiring older more responsible people to work in the plant, seems like all the young bucks they hire dont last, there are 5-6 of us getting close to retirement very close together, so dont know how hes gonna take that............all of us operate the automated cnc machines and we have the most experience on them............oh well, I didnt take this job to make a career out of it, just trying to make it to retirement.........which is just a little over 3 yrs away...............:dancefool::dancefool:

About 15 years ago I took a job with city government. Took some feedback from friends over that decision. Mostly the same old stuff about lazy city employees.

But what I got for it was a better health plan, retirement plan (old jobs had nothing), and steady employment (no lay offs). It was worth it. I am a couple years now from full retirement.

I feel for all those out there who are up against the economy. I had more jobs than I could count...any bump in the economy knocked me sideways.

Maybe things happen for a reason. I am glad this is working out for you. Hange in there...best of luck.
