I bought my 83 about two months ago, after it's first washing I armor-all'ed the seat and that is when it started to happen. The seat started kinda turning gooey. It's like the first layer is disolving. My bike is gold with a brown seat so what I need is a good used seat or information on where to get a stock cover to replace the sticky one.

my 85 brown seat did that as well and it seems to be a common issue. Most end up getting the seat reupholstered. I replaced my seat but opted to try a company called fibrerew that has franchisees all over north america that specializes in redoing damaged fabrics and vinyl and leather to do my passenger backrest and it turned out great for 50bucks. (they also dyed it black to match my new seat for that same 50bucks)

I think maybe that I should have tried the fibrenew option before spending a bunch of money on a new seat.

Get it fixed if you can. The early first gen seats are probably the most comfortable stock seat ever made for a bike!

Hey Brian,

Thanks for mentioning the company Fibrenew. I've been putting off having my seat recovered until winter but it sounds like this company may be able to help. They have a location about 50 miles from me so that might be workable.

Just sent off an e-mail and a couple of pics to them and waiting to see if they are interested in doing the work or if they can even help with this problem.

My seat and backrest started getting that tacky feel a couple of months ago and it's a PIA. (pun intended) I told my daughter it's a safety feature to keep her from sliding off but she's not buying it.

I'll post any response I receive from them. Hope it works.

Why would you put ArmorAll on the seat. That crap damages many finishes, not just vinyl. I wouldn't even use it on tires. And even if it hadn't damaged it it would have left it slick and dangerous.
