deorto Posted August 14, 2008 #1 Posted August 14, 2008 parts from a 89 vr interchangeble with a 84 vr
GigaWhiskey Posted August 14, 2008 #2 Posted August 14, 2008 depends on what parts you are referring to. Many are.
Captain Murph Posted August 14, 2008 #3 Posted August 14, 2008 Some, many, most, it depends. Plastic, mostly. Brakes, some. Carbs 83-85 or 86-93. Wheels - all Mufflers, pipes, etc. - all Saddlebags - 83-85 or 86-93 Trunks - 83-84 or 85-93 Driveline components - some for all, others vary. Seats - all but rider backrests vary. And on... You really need to identify which parts you'd like to know about. When in doubt, you can check the online fiche at www.cyclepartsnation.com and look up any year. Murph'

Murph' To expand a bit on Murph's list, I just got bit by the differences on the rear wheel. Getting ready to head to Canada, bought a much needed rear tire for the 89. Since it's tough to change the back wheel with all the tupperware, I figured I'd get the tire mounted on a "spare" 84 rim, replace the bearings, and then use a forklift at work to haul the back end of the bike to remove and replace. Already knew I had to swap the brake discs, as the 89 and 84 are different. Heat and an impact wrench got that done and went to put the "new" rim on. Wouldn't go. Refused to engage on the drive splines. Much cursing (which won't be repeated here!) before I realized that the plastic dust cover on the drive side was a different size. Pulled the wheel back off, four screws on each to swap and it went back on and worked fine for 1300 miles so far. For what it's worth. Paul
deorto Posted August 28, 2008 Author #6 Posted August 28, 2008 i was going to swap out the raido, class unit, compressor, brake lines, head light
Captain Murph Posted August 28, 2008 #7 Posted August 28, 2008 You'll be OK with all but the headlight. 86-93 are different.
Venturous Randy Posted August 28, 2008 #8 Posted August 28, 2008 You'll be OK with all but the headlight. 86-93 are different. The headlight swap from an 89 to an 84 is a great swap and big improvement. You will need to swap the headlight bucket, frame that mounts the dash, the left side frame that holds the upper fairing, the adjustment assembly, the small bracket under the headlight that holds the split fairings together and the ring around the headlight. This is one of the best improvements from an 83-85 to an 86 up. RandyA
