tony h Posted August 14, 2008 #1 Posted August 14, 2008 '87 with 60K miles. not all the time but 2 times in the past three weeks, I will start off my first run of the day and about 3 miles into it, the Oil indicator comes on. It lasts about 15 seconds. Just long enough to get scared then it goes out. After that.. nothing. I can rev the engine, let it idle down upshift, downshift and the engine is happy. The oil was changed about 1000 miles ago so it's not like i have molasses in the pan. Has anyone seen this? Can I pull the oil sensor and clean it? Any thoughts? That's a false reading I can live without.

Put your bike on the center stand or make the bike as level as you can and look at the site window, near the bottom of the case on the clutch side of the motor and see if the oil level is between the marks. If it is then all is safe and the false reading is from a continuity issue between the sending unit and the dash unit. If it is low then you may not have put in the correct amount of oil when changing it the last time. Dick

I just did the oil 1000miles ago, the site glass level is happy happy. Thanks for the info... I didn't know it was a Level indicator. I thought it was pressure. That makes me feel better.
gibvel Posted August 14, 2008 #4 Posted August 14, 2008 The one on my 89 would come on, like that, on cold mornings when I was reving it hard coming off of a cloverleaf onto the highway. So when I was in a hard lean and then would push it getting up to highway speed at the end of the on ramp. Does this sound like anything that you're doing?

I think the times it happened I was leaving a traffic light...not that hard though. I'll have to pay attention to the commonalities to the scenario. I think both times I was down shifting to a red light then accelerated up because the light turned green before I got there. I guess that would splash the oil around more then normal. Thanks
6m459 Posted August 15, 2008 #6 Posted August 15, 2008 Usually during an accelleratioin phase like leaving a light or pulling out to pass. It is a heart stopper isn't it. I have noticed in these events, that my oil level is in the lower half of the "happy" range when this has happened. I topped up to put the level into the upper half and havent had this happen since. BTW, I am using 20W50 grade oil since it is easiest to get locally. Cheers, Brian H. Uxbridge Ont
