igya Posted August 13, 2008 #1 Posted August 13, 2008 Oh man! Danged E1 code has me stumped. I finally got this '85 restored pretty well but I get an E1 code on my suspension control unit, so no air to my shocks. The repair manual flow chart says that if you hear a click from the pump unit whe the ignition is turned on, then go to the sensor. First of all, I haven't found the sensor which is supposed to be up front. Have any of you had to deal with this before? AND, my front shocks are bottomed out when riding. Is this normal with no air? I would think that the front shocks would NOT be bottomed out when riding because of the spring support. Am I wrong about this? I WANNA RIDE!!!
Squidley Posted August 13, 2008 #2 Posted August 13, 2008 Charlie, I feel your pain as I had problems with my 1st gens and that Class system. I know that many have said to resolder the joints, but sometimes thats a crap shoot. What I have found is if you open the flip door up and push the plug into the back of the controller it sometimes works. Many will tell you to keep trying to fix it, I'll tell you to bypass it and go with manual scrader valves and be done with it. Also too if you swap out to progressive springs front and rear, you wont have to worry about airing them ever again.

So, where would be the best place to put the new valves? And, wouldn't I need to separate the front from the rear? Also, could you save me a lot of searching by telling me the best to get the valves and progressive springs? Thanks a lot!
Dano Posted August 13, 2008 #4 Posted August 13, 2008 Progressive springs from www.shopmawonline.com . I would just take the lines off the pump, get some schrader valves to put on the lines, make a bracket and mount them somewhere easy to get to in the back. Dan

Charlie, DanO has the link to MAW, I have used them before for Progressive springs and have had good luck with them. The fronts are relatively inexpensive at about $60 for the set, they are pretty strait forward to change as I have done half a dozen or so. The rear progressive shock is much more expensive, but it doesn't have an air valve, you adjust it for how you ride and your weight. Now the scrader valves will be the hold up, I have used the ones off the 1200 cc Venture standards as they didn't have all the extras like CB and Radio and the CLASS system. My '86 just recently went to Louisiana as Kbran just bought it. If you get a hold of him he might be able to take some pics of where I mounted the schrader valves. The rear one I drilled a hole in the plate that holds the dampener knob and installed it right below it. The front one I installed in the plastic top cover just to the right of the handlebars. Wish I was a bit closer as it's not a real big deal if you have the right stuff. Let us know how you come along and you never know who might have some of the parts that your looking for. Check ebay and our classifieds
Skid Posted August 14, 2008 #6 Posted August 14, 2008 I had to resolder all the joints inside to fix the E4 error code, but since I went with the progressive springs I never added ANY air to the front shocks. The ride is excellent and you will not get a better ride.
