I was just wondering if anyone has ran the Dunlop Elite IIIs on their Venture. I called a Yamaha dealer to ask if he had any 404s in stock and he advised he would not mount them on the Venture. He said on a bike that size he would only mount Elite IIIs. I told him that the 404s were the recommended tire, and he advised that his conscience would not allow him to send someone off on a Venture with 404s under it. I've ran 404s with no problem.

I purchased mine with the Elite III on it. Seem fine to me, but I haven't ridden in a few years. Looked brand new then, have about 4k on it since. 2 months now.

your yamaha "dealer", is quite a salesman!

he is apparently in the TIRE business, to make a huge profit.

i have never heard of a 404, NOT being recommended for a venture.

i would look for another dealer, if i were you.

I got 50,000 miles on 404s and IMO they are better than Avons... I got better mileage and I think they handle well and I've pushed them to extreme use riding 2 up pulling a trailer without so much as a flat... I think they are very underated because they're "OEM" speced tire and are reasonably priced..

He's probably right, but I think it's because of the new 404's like the 150-90H15, the tire that only gets 8,000 miles with it's cheap soft rubber. Like you getting 50k. I've never gotten close to that, just 24k on a rear tire, but that was the old 404, the 150-90B15. Theres been lots of talk about the 404 now only getting 8,000 miles out of a tire when we use to get 22-24,000 miles per tire. But their just like every other company, they just want to make more money, not have a happy customer any more. :whistling:

My bike came with Bridgestones on both front and rear. I purchased a new 404 for the rear and got about 7000 miles before it was completely worn out. I suspect that I would have gotten more miles but under the conditions I put it through I didn't expect any more. My wife and I tip the scales on the heavy side, plus I was pulling a single wheel trailer on the rear to add an additional 40 pounds or so. I have since installed an E-III and have put about 1,500 mile on it. It doesn't appear to have any wear thus far. Everything I've read up to this point has been positive regarding the E-III, with the exception of having less grip on wet pavement. I've ridden in the rain and have not experienced any problems...of course I slow down, watch whats going on around me and try my abosolute best to avoid any sudden movements. IMHO I think you'll find the E-III a superb tire. The Bridgestone that came on the front is still in place and beginning to show signs of wear and cupping. I've got about 16,000 miles on it so far.

The 50 K was using several sets of tires... But they were such an improvement over the original Bridgestones I really liked them and dug the http://WWW... I got between 15k and 7500 on the 404s... I just tried my 1st set of Avons and got 7500 mostly 1 up and some trailering and some people are claiming 22K out of them and most people love them but I won't be buying them again... I'm going to the Dark Side with a car tire in back and maybe a Dunlop E-3 Radial up front.

The last D404 I ran on the back I got 2500 mi before cord was showing thru. That is not a typo, two thousand five hundred miles! I don't blame your dealer a bit in refusing to sell you an inferior product. As a result I will never run Dunlops of any kind again if I can help it. Avon Venoms for me from now on.-Jack

I bought my 06 Midnight used from a private sale.. The bike had 404's on them and after 24,000 miles of the previous rider's travels, the rear tire was shot and the front soon following. My 2005 Vstar came with 404's on the rims and those didn't last long what so ever. So on the VStar I put ME880 which laster forever.. awesome tires for that bike..

But for the Venture I installed E3's in the front and rear and the bike rode so much better than it did with the previous tires (of course but as bad as the previous tires were, anything would have been better) but the E3s are awesome tires on this bike.

Shop around for the best price though, I got mine cheaper from an out of town seller than I could have gotten 404's locally.. ; )

The salesman you dealt with was either trying to upsell tires or passing on his personal recommendation of what he honestly felt were the better tire. We automatically assume they's trying to rip us off.. but if he were that committed towards the E3's he would have made you a super savings deal.. if his conscience was full of concerns ; )

Can't go wrong with E3s

I notice where the E IIIs have the same size back tire, but what size front tire would you recommend?
