why does the petcock valve have "screens" on it?

to me , it makes more sense, to let rust particles, water, trash in general, get OUT of the fuel tank, and get trapped in the fuel filter.

isn't that why the fuel filter is there in the first place?

Petcock is first filter. Catches most of it I guess. I had a rusty tank that I put three filters on in line. It worked. Looks like they could make petcock just a valve and put filters outside.

If you had no screen on the petcock rust flakes could lodge in the end of the pipe starving the supply. The screen gives you a larger surface area to have rust flakes on but still supply enough fuel.

Think a valve without screen and a easy change filter woukd make more sense.

I agree more with Neil, if by chance a rust flake came through and cut through the filer it would end up in a carb. Now your talking time and money to screw with it and down time. An automobile is the same way, 2 or sometimes 3 filters before it gets to the carb or FI
