Iowa Guy Posted August 11, 2008 #1 Posted August 11, 2008 My wife noticed some writing on the back of the backrest yesterday as we headed out for a Sunday ride. Anybody else have this on their backrest? "WARNING This backrest is for solo riding only!" So, whats up with that? Is this just a CYA or should I be taking it off everytime she gets on? Iowa Guy

Iowa Guy My guess is it is both CYA and a real problem. If bike was to run straight on into something at a low enough speed to keep form flipping forward and throwing both riders up, that backrest could do some nasty damage to the space between the legs and lower pelvis of a passenger. But there are an awful lot of them in use on lots of different bikes, and I have never seen any specific reports of injuries attributed just to the back rest. Goose
Semi-retired Posted August 11, 2008 #3 Posted August 11, 2008 I agree with both of you. I'd bet big money that it's just the mfg guys ducking for cover in the event that the "projection" causes any injury in an accident situation. I think my 2007 Camry manual says not to operate the vehicle without the rear headrests in place for the same reason. However, if you really want to see out the back window of your 2007 Camry, you pretty much have to remove those bloody headrests. (Sorry about the whiplash, passengers!!) My guess is it is both CYA and a real problem. Schlepporello Posted August 11, 2008 #4 Posted August 11, 2008 Well, I don't know about the rest of you folks, but the missus and me ain't the thinnest people around or equally proportioned for that matter. I stand 6'-7.5" tall and the missus is 5'2" tall. I had to pull my back rest off so my wife wouldn't have it diggin' into her middle and it hindered her getting on the bike with her short laigs anyway. It's off and we're snug as a bug now.
Condor Posted August 12, 2008 #5 Posted August 12, 2008 I stand 6'-7.5" tall and the missus is 5'2" tall.. I used to be that tall. Gravity and old age suck.....
Guest Humpster Posted August 12, 2008 #6 Posted August 12, 2008 Iowa Guy, if you are looking to have some one take that backrest off your hands let me know! that is if it is for a 1st gen. I am with every one else here. just the mfr covering their hind sides
MiCarl Posted August 12, 2008 #7 Posted August 12, 2008 I pulled mine off because it's a passenger pelvis breaker for sure. Plus I didn't want to have to throw my leg that high. It'll be available this winter when I pull the brackets from under the seat.
