tooldood Posted August 10, 2008 #1 Posted August 10, 2008 I have... 4 weeks ago on my way home from work, I was trying to pull away at a stop light (trying is the key word there) and no forward motion... but, I did have an interesting (and distressing) chattering sound. You know the sound... like a stripped gear. Well thanks to a fellow VR member and a guy a WHOLE lot smarter than me (insert jokes here), Klaus and I (mostly Klaus w/ me getting in the way) got the transmissions replaced. In the middle gear area it was broken in about 3 pieces. It is swapped and re-assembled, and next weekend it should be back in the bike and I'll be back on 2 wheels... I've been accused of being crabby lately... I really need some cycle therapy!! Oh... I know... it didn't happen if theres no pics. I took these with my cell phone, so the quality is just ok...
Dano Posted August 10, 2008 #2 Posted August 10, 2008 Pretty good pics! My 84 has a cam right behind the pinion, maybe prevents this? Dan
kantornado Posted August 10, 2008 #3 Posted August 10, 2008 (edited) I feel left out I could of came over to help (UH hold a seat down) or at least hold a tool. Glad you'll be back on the road and I know she will be cranking out the power now.........Ron Edited August 11, 2008 by kantornado
tooldood Posted August 11, 2008 Author #4 Posted August 11, 2008 Ron we sure didn't mean to leave you out of all the fun... (that's what Klaus kept callin' it) but I figured you'd be out riding! Next weekend you can come over for the re-assembly. I'll get some ribs on the bbq and let them slow cook while we work. I figure while the bike is nekkid, it'll be the right time to change the plugs, wires, caps, blinker fluid, and the tires over to the Summer Air.....
kantornado Posted August 15, 2008 #5 Posted August 15, 2008 We look foreword to seeing you both and helping you change all the STUFF. Linda is excited and it will be a great Saturday. You want us there at 8am?? Let me know............................Ron

mbrood Posted August 17, 2008 #7 Posted August 17, 2008 That just looks like a nasty failure. Sure glad you had help available. It's ok to think of pulling the engine... totally different to try it without help! Glad you'll be back on the road soon and get some "sanity rides" in...
tooldood Posted August 17, 2008 Author #8 Posted August 17, 2008 First off... Thank you Klaus!!! If it wasn't for you, I'd still be sitting there looking at a broken down ride. After much sweating and groaning, Klaus (w/ me helping) got the engine back in the frame, the carbs and exhaust all back on and fired it up!! Now it's up to me to spend my afternoon putting the skin back on so it looks like a Venture again.
