jburrell Posted August 9, 2008 #1 Posted August 9, 2008 I have lost all power 2x now. Once while going 55 and once while parked and both after at least 15miles. I did not have power to anything either time. No headlights speedo etc no power to start the bike. Twenty minutes later all is good. I guess the igniton switch is bad and needs cleaning checking out. I suspected this or battery issues in previous thread and several members agreed it was ignition. I agree after seeing this again as it did it while parked. Turned the key on and off over and over and nothing. Then 20-25 minutes and I'm good to go. It appears that this may be a heat issue. Perhaps the driving lights are wired thru switch causing it to heat up? I reviewed what I can find on this site about the ignition switch issue but find that the temp fix thread is dead. Another person mentions a site (bukeyes perf) but I did nto see the part there. Can someone point me to the fix for the temp fix and explain why I should use it and secondly does anyone have directions on removing the switch. I was told to move the tank back and that there is a security bolts to deal with while another mentioned that he took his off without moving the tank and took 15 minutes. Can someone clarify before I start this week? Any help would be appreciated. Jb
Freebird Posted August 9, 2008 #2 Posted August 9, 2008 Here is the thread. See if it answers your questions. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=512
BradT Posted August 10, 2008 #3 Posted August 10, 2008 Those security bolts have lock tight on them as well. I was told to die grind slot in them and useing a bg screw driver. IT did not help much but if you had an impact screwdriver you may break it free. I ground the bolt that is welded to the frame off and then just used a lock bolts. I did the temp fix a few years back if you wanted to call me and we could go through it. Phone numbers in my profile. BRad
jburrell Posted August 10, 2008 Author #4 Posted August 10, 2008 Thanks guys. This all makes sense now that I see it. Looks like I am getting a new switch. I am sure glad I bought a new dremel today so I can take care of those bolts. I just went to the tool store today and got me a MC/ATV jack from Harbor Frieght for $52 as well as a new set of metric sockets and new screwdrivers etc. I am now back up to snuff when it comes to tools to address issues. I really likes the 8.99 metric socket set they had on sale. All sockets different colors. Had to get a rain check on the air compressor though. My son is dying to repaint my bike. No it doesnt need repainting but he is a Tatoo Artist and recently learned how to paint bikes by working at a bike shop that does custom airbrus work. I already have a helmet painted by him. I may let him paint some of it but I think I will just let him "enhanse" it rather than change it completly. He's gonnna have to wait awhile first. The bike looks to good right now to mess with. Maybe if I drop it. Again thanks all for your help Gunboat thanks for stopping Saturday. Hope you and KBay got the kinks out and had a good ride. I should be good to go in about 2 weeks JB
robbitybob Posted August 10, 2008 #5 Posted August 10, 2008 I just got back with my new to me '99 RSV. On the ride home (from McAllen, TX to Indiana) I pulled in to get gas in Arkansas and when I turned the key on afterwards - nothing. Thank God after I turned it off and then back on it all came to life. So I am going to be changing my switch also. JB have you secured a source for your switch? Does anyone have a recommendation or should I just head to the closest Yamaha dealer?
jburrell Posted August 11, 2008 Author #6 Posted August 11, 2008 Yammi dealer wants $175 for the ignition switch. I am getting mine off ebay. I am going to go for the package that has all the keyed items then I will only need 1 Key for all the locable items ( $150). Biggest issue I see at this point is how to get out that security bolt and what to use once I do. I am removing the tank etc this week since we will see rain all week and I am waiting on parts anyway.Next week I will start out putting the switch in place and while I am at in I need to do a clutch rebuild since I have a small leak at the lower end. I got my Jack and other tools Sat from HF so I think I am ready to start learning how to fix things. OF course I may need further guidance once I get started with my projects. Good luck on yours too. robbitybob Posted August 11, 2008 #7 Posted August 11, 2008 JB, Are you putting the temp handlebar switch on as well as a new ignition switch?
jburrell Posted August 12, 2008 Author #8 Posted August 12, 2008 No I think I'll pass on that as it seems that it would make it to easy to "borrow" my wheels. JB
BradT Posted August 12, 2008 #9 Posted August 12, 2008 JB, Are you putting the temp handlebar switch on as well as a new ignition switch? If you are refering to the switch in the photos, and if it was wired the way it was shown it would still require the key to make the ignition fire over. IN other words if you flipped the switch it would crank over but not start, without the key turned on. Some people have commented about adding the switch but hide it under the seat, just in case. Brad
jburrell Posted August 14, 2008 Author #10 Posted August 14, 2008 Now that makes sense. I think I will add the hidden switch with the new key switch. I may need to call you for help though. thansk for the assistance. JB
