Hi,

I have a question about the first gens vents. I bought an 83 VR and while Im not trying to make it a museum piece, I do want to fix what I can and make the bike as functional as possible.

I have a couple of broken vents on the fairing (the ones on the sides of the fairing that blow cool air on your legs) and one of my vents covering the back two cylinders is broken and doesnt want to stay open. My question is in 2 parts.....first, I have noticed several pics on the Venture Galleries of 83 - 86's that dont have vents over the back two cylinders, instead that spot is open and on some there is a curved piece of chrome. Is this something yamaha did? Like the difference between Ventures and Venture Royale models? Or is this a modification that riders have come up with to let the engine have a little more air flow.

The other question is about locating new vents....any suggestions? Ebay? Websites? Junkyards?

Thanks for any feedback

Paul:thumbsup:

The 83 and 84 models did not come with the vents over the rear cylinders. The chrome covers for that area are aftermarket. eBay has the vents for the lowers fairly often but maybe someone on here has a set.

you should be able to still get them at flatout.

If they are old, the flaps will close on thier own. If their new, they will be a little on the tight side so they will stay open if you want them to.

You may want to check your side panels. The vents where available from 86 on, and the earlier Mark I's don't have the screw mount posts around the opening on the inside. I have the vents on my '83, but it has side panels from a gold '87. On the leg vents in the lowers. Ebay, and they're all the same from '83-'93

I wonder if anyone has a method for making these older ones a little stiff (NO VIAGRA JOKES PLEASE), Im talking about the vents!!!!!

'85s have the side vents too. Thought I would drop this in so you have an extra year to choose from if you go that route.

Didn't know that. I was lucky enough to have the '87 panal color match the '83 VR gold. I think the '85's only came in brown?? If George's scoot is a standard and red, 88 and 89 red maroons will come close....

Zanotti at http://www.zanottimotor.com/ has good prices too. I bought one new side vent (the triangular ones) for arouind 70 bucks. As you may know, those let out hot air on your legs, very nice in the cold, and close it off when the weather's hot.

IMHO, grease would make the vent even floppier after 3 or 4 cycles. I tightened up mine with tint e-clips. I took a vent into Ace and found E-clips that would fit on the little plastic posts where the linkage snaps on. It only needed one or two clips on one post to tighten up the whole thing (per vent, that is).
