erhm are any of you gents and ladies electrically inclined to be able to help me out with this one?

I've come to realize that my 4 way flashers no longer work, I am not able to find a clymer book to help me with the trouble shooting so I'm hoping one of you savvy individuals can assist me..

With the bike running or not, ignition switch on (bike not running), I have my turn signals working properly if the 4 way flasher switch is to "off" position.

However, when the 4 way flasher switch is to the "on" position, the signal lights won't flash.

Someone has told me that it's a simple 4 way relay change but don't know the part number or location or 'anything else' about it..

Anyone able to help me out with this one?

Many thanks in advance!

Cheers

You got 4-way flashers on a 2006?

Are they supposed to be on a 2004 as well?

They are on the 2005 as well. its a switch up by the cruise control switches on the right hand cluster on the bar...

The 4 way flasher switch slides up and down.. long narrow looking thing..

The factory service manual is available for download for FREE in the VR Tech section of this web site!!!!!!!!!

Beware that there are a few minor errors in it. Search this site for that data.

You should poke around the tech section!!!! Just click on the VR Tech link on the left side of EVERY page here!!!!

To save you some time you can click HERE for a more direct link to the manuals.

Once you open it search for Flasher or Hazard.

BTW it is probally the Hazard relay either unseated or needs to be replaced.

Seaking.

I have an o4 Midnight that the flashers have stopped working on also. I left mine on for a couple of days after I stopped to help get a Harley going:dancefool: and it just stopped. I didn't notice it for several days and I haven't checked it out yet, but I believe I blew a fuse. I dont have anything coming on when I turn the switch on.

Your problem sounds like the flasher has failed. The flasher for the 4-ways is under the front cowling, if I remember correctly. If not it is under the left side panel. (If I'm wrong someone will speak up). Once you get the cowling off you will see a metal electronics box in the center of the handlebars. The flasher is to the left, facing the bike, of that box. It is a black square relay that has a white 2-prong connector on it. You can unplug it and using a jumper wire between the two wires in the connector, check to see if the lights come on, then off, when you plug in and unplug the jumper. What you are doing is mimicing the flasher by interupting the current flow. This will tell you if it is the flasher. I would bet mnoney it is since you do have lights working, but not blinking.

One of the best accessories that I have bought is the Yamaha Repair manual for the Venture. While they got some things wrong, it is very valuable for problems such as this.

Good Luck.

There are Two Seperate Fuse's

One for the Signal lights.

And a Seperate fuse for the Hazard lights,

Have you found and checked that fuse ?

Maby just a blown fuse.

Also, suspect the Switch in the " Haz " position,

Also, be aware that when switch is in the Haz position, the Signal lights will

not work as the power to them comes Thru the Switch when in the Haz Off position.

I don't think the switch is the problem as when it is in the HAZ pos, the signal lights don't work.. and the fuses check out serviceable.. Hence why I am thinking it's the relay..

But which of them is the relay and where is it located, the manuals downloadable from here aren't showing very much (kinda useless for this snag, to be honest... ergh)

Have a look at the manual about this snag and tell me if the book was a good purchase.. for me it's not telling me anything about this error or how to located the components or any form of troubleshooting.. I can't find mention of the "haz lights or 4 way flashers"..

I might be blind but I can't find it in the book..

Where the Hazard relay is located is in the manual on page 2-32 Item #5 located in the upper fairing.

The switch is addressed on page 8-3

Schematic is on page 8-30 Item #18

The whole bike Schematic is on page 9-7 Item #18

You might try the procedure staring on page 8-32

Maybe I'm not reading this right.

Are we talking about the Royal Star Venture - or what?

If we are, then the Aussie bike is different to the State-side bike.

THERE IS NO 4-WAY FLASHER SWITCH ON MY 2004 RSV.

Mine is 04 RSV also. 4 way flasher switch is on the right handlebar to the left of the cruise "res / accel" switch. It has a outline of a red triangle imprinted into the aluminum just to the right of the switch. The switch slides up vertically to activate.

It is refered to as hazard switch in the owner's manual and is shown on page 3-7, and described on page 3-8. Looking in the front of the owner's manual, is states the copyright is by Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA.

I think this is the first bike I have owned with hazard flashers. I cannot remember for sure if my 86 Honda GL1200 interstate had them, but none of the other maybe 20 bikes I have owned did not have them.

Check and let us know.

Hey Bubba.

I'll do that - when the weather warms up enough so I'm game to go outside to the bike shed and take the cover off the l'il darling. I'm SURE there is no hazard light switch on my 2004 RSV. My BMW R1150RT had them though.

"When the weather warms up".. bass ackwards downunder! yes, I appreciate it's winter down under right now but is it really that cold? Sorry for the ignorance, I've never been down there but funny enough I didn't think it would get that cold out there in the winter..

But do let us know about the switch on your bike, maybe Aussies don't need them like some drivers don't need the turn signal switch ; )

Crap!! I should have seen this before I had the fairing off this weekend!! argh!

Many thanks for itemizing what I should be looking at.. The bike is down hard for a week waiting for critical brake parts now.. I live in that geographical oddity zone where everything takes a week to be shipped in.. and it's a long week's wait.. At least it's raining this week which makes the withdrawal symptoms more endurable.. =)

Thanks again M8

Egads.. the silliest of things.. ergh.. A while back I reported that my 4 way flashers ceased to work and that I couldn't find the darn relay to have have a look at the system..

Well, here's what fixed my problem.

The relay is located under the front shroud / fairing to the right side (looking from rear to front).

What had happened is that while some wiring repairs were being done (previous owner's wiring had gone bad), the erhm connector plug became undone.. Basically, the system was unplugged..

So.. erhm... ahh.. yeah... watch what yer doing when in there.. ; )

System works.. when it's plugged in.. ooops

I saw a guy on the side of the road one night last week... saw the red flashing light from about 1/2 mile away (not 4-ways). When I stopped to offer assistance, it turns out that he had an LED flasher just clipped on the rear of his saddle bag while he was stopped. One of those lights that bicyclists use. He said he keeps it in the saddle bag and uses it as his "hazard" light. For motorcycles without 4-ways it seems like a cheap but effective idea.

The light was something like this one on ebay for around $5:

P.S. - turns out the guy & his motorcycle were fine... just on the side of the road to make a phone call to his warden since he was running late.

hahaha well cheaper and SIMPLER than re-wiring the whole bike.. but still means digging them out and installing them for the purpose.. However, good idea..
