MAINEAC Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 On the Delph Dark Side Forum some people are reporting "exploding tires"... Anyone have any problems mounting their CT? How much pressure did it take to pop the bead? I told my Buddy not to use more than 80 lbs... It seems most of the explodes have happened over 100 lbs although 1 user claims his happened at less than 100... There is some that are saying it only happens to the Japanese Tires... But I think that's some people's opinion.. Be careful mounting these tires as an explosion will ruin your wheel and rotor not to mention what it could do to a person too close... Noone is reporting any personal injuries as of yet. http://forums.delphiforums.com/DarkSiding/messages?msg=295.1
flb_78 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I used 40psi. That's all it took. Me thinks the other folks aren't lubing the tires up properly.
flb_78 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 http://www.viewpoints.com/images/review/2007/181/23/1183263253-91382_full.jpg I normally use Murphy's tire soap but I had none at the time. I read through that thread and I do not agree with the way those folks are mounting tires. The tire and rim both need to be lubed up good to seat properly. I have used dishsoap before, but it dries too fast for me. I also left my tire outside in the sun. That makes a world of difference in mounting. http://www.alltiresupply.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/MU-2000.jpg
1BigDog Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Mark, are you mounting that Federal tire? If so, let me know how it performs. Im kinda teetering on the edge here and I like the Federal profile.

MAINEAC Posted August 27, 2008 Author Posted August 27, 2008 I finally got my bike back Thursday night... I got home Wed. from Florida and my bro got the stator installed but couldn't get the tire mounted using less than 100 lbs of air... he aired it up like 20 times and tried bouncing it and banging it then dropped it off at Tire Warehouse and they got it mounted 3 hours later and didn't charge anything.. Well I started out with 32 lbs of air but I had a wiggle under hard acceleration in 3rd gear... and I was getting a wobble at 85-90 mph... It feels kinda squishy and not as sure footed in the curves... I upped the air to 40 lbs and the wiggle is gone and feels alot more sure footed in the curves... I rode out to Blue Hill, Brooklin, Deer Isle, Stonington.... Plenty of curves... I didn't get up to 85 so I'm not sure of the wobble... LA stopped by on his way to Nova Scotia and he said the CT will bring out any problems with the bike... I'm hopeing the air pressure straightens it out... If not I'll adjust my steering head then check swingarm bushings. I don't have ant pictures yet and have about 900 miles on the CT... will update when I got something else
gunboat Posted August 27, 2008 Posted August 27, 2008 hi mark i belive when i mounted my c/t i used upwards of 100 psi. it did make a rather LOUD pop when seated. as i rethink the way i mounted the tire i did not lube the rim as flb said. i did let the tire and rim set outside in the sun for awhile before airing it up. for lube i used some old dow-corning (dc-33) o-ring lube i had laying around. but i only lube up the bead on the tire and not the rim it self. so that should make a difference as flb said. yes i still like the c/t. just my 2 . what was the name and size of the radial front tire you had told me about? best reguards don c.

MAINEAC Posted August 27, 2008 Author Posted August 27, 2008 Don your "sun" is a little stronger than ours... My bike guy used dish soap and couldn't get it... the Tire Warehouse guy used tire lube... I know cuz I had to clean it off... I told him not to go over 100 lbs cuz of the reports on Delphi of the Japanese tires exploding over 100 Don it seems to be a OEM tire for a Kawi Vulcan 2000 and it looks like the Avon is cheaper than the Dunlop... I had bad luck with the Avon Bias tires so I might get the Dunlops 150/80R16 71VBW3367-913.5025.355.595/32760 @ 40 Dunlop D-251 or AV71/AV72 COBRA RADIALS Snakeskin sidewall treatment complements the Cobra logo and tread design; a truly unique custom look. Fits everything from Valkyries to Customs. Advanced Variable Belt Density (A-VBD) rear construction uses a densely wrapped belt in the center of the tire for stability, wear and mileage; the belt is less dense on the shoulder for a huge, compliant contact patch. Lifetime Profile Engineering (LPE) for consistent handling and stability for the full life of the tire. Enhanced Aqua Flow (EAF) tread pattern gives optimal water dispersal. Enhanced Stability System (ESS) design reduces tire flex for improved grip and stability. H-rated for speeds up to 130 mph; V-rated for speeds up to 149 mph, or W-rated for speeds up to 168+ mph. All radial except for 21" front. http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/images/av71av72cobra.gif Product Name Price Buy Now AVON AV71 COBRA 150/80R-16 FRONT $138.36 http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/templates/0112/images/buttons/english/button_buy_now.gifhttp://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=33_120_137_587&products_id=1591
