bugfish69 Posted August 2, 2008 #1 Posted August 2, 2008 Can I use this? Decided I needed to start doing my own oil changes and read a bunch of posts. Decided on Mobil 1 synthetic and then went to wal-mart for a filter and oil. I did not realize there was a vast selection withing that category. The 0W-30 states it exceeds temp specs of 5w30 and 10w30 and it was $23 for a 4.75 quart jug. This beats the $6 to $7 per quart for the others.
Freebird Posted August 2, 2008 #2 Posted August 2, 2008 I'm sorry but I would not use it. I think if you look on the bottle, you will see something that says "Energy Conserving" or something like that. That will be that it has friction modifiers and will likely cause your clutch to start slipping.
bugfish69 Posted August 2, 2008 Author #3 Posted August 2, 2008 Which Mobil 1 synthetic should I use? Just plain 10W30 synthetic?
paperboy Posted August 2, 2008 #4 Posted August 2, 2008 Get 15-50 mobil one! Same price as the other one, but this stuff is not energy conserving.
spyderhead Posted August 2, 2008 #5 Posted August 2, 2008 I use Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W40 (motorcycle specific/not energy conserving).
flb_78 Posted August 2, 2008 #6 Posted August 2, 2008 The 0W30 can cause you some serious clutch problems me thinks. It'll have an abundance of "friction modifiers" that are "energy conserving". Flip the bottle over and look at the Starburst on the back. Almost all sub-40 weight oils are energy conserving. I am using Rotella T 15W40 diesel oil this time around. It's cheap, plentiful and has lots of great reviews. http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:eGRFikNj19GoXM:http://www.dansmc.com/starburst2.jpg http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:iZx_PTpfw1oOpM:http://www.bardahl.ca/images/API.GIF http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:mG3OxhYGsa_wAM:http://www.gas-mileage-enhancers.com/correct%2520oil%2520viscosity%2520is%2520a%2520gas%2520mileage%2520enhancer.gif http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:Cc7edT0s7tkFTM:http://www.dansmc.com/oilright.jpg
Freebird Posted August 2, 2008 #7 Posted August 2, 2008 I use Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W40 (motorcycle specific/not energy conserving). This is the one that I use also.
SilvrT Posted August 4, 2008 #8 Posted August 4, 2008 I changed my oil yesterday and used Mobil 1 SuperSyn 10w40 (MX4T) motorcycle oil. Went for a day ride and around mid-point of the ride, clutch started slipping. By the time we were close to home on return, I couldn't crank it in either 4th or 5th as the clutch would slip real bad. Dropping that oil today and gonna try the Rotella T 15W40 diesel (if I can find it)
Guest Boomerbiker Posted August 4, 2008 #9 Posted August 4, 2008 Have used the Mobil 1 motorcycle 10W 40 weight synthetic - $8.69 at Wal-Mart (when they stock it) for 15,000 miles without a hiccup. Saw the identical oil at a motorcycle dealer over the weekend for $14 bucks a quart. Robbers.
SilvrT Posted August 4, 2008 #10 Posted August 4, 2008 Incidentally, I have a Barnett clutch in my scoot... I wonder if certain oils that works fine in stock clutches may cause slippage in the Barnett. If I can find it today, I'm going to try the Shell Rotella T 15w40 diesel oil.
Squidley Posted August 4, 2008 #11 Posted August 4, 2008 If I can find it today, I'm going to try the Shell Rotella T 15w40 diesel oil. I have run Rotella T for years and have never had any issues with it ever
SilvrT Posted August 4, 2008 #12 Posted August 4, 2008 I have run Rotella T for years and have never had any issues with it ever When I bought the Mobil 1 yesterday I was looking at the Rotella but they only had one litre and I couldn't remember if it was the one folks here use. That was at Crappy Tire (Canadian Tire for you non-Canucks ). I'll check again this morning...might end up in a "wild goose chase" LOL
GeorgeS Posted August 4, 2008 #13 Posted August 4, 2008 I use Mobil-1 15W-50W, Never had a problem. However I have a Barnett Clutch.
V7Goose Posted August 4, 2008 #14 Posted August 4, 2008 Rotella Triple Protection meets JASO-MA Specs Just an FYI - the Rotella oils were reformulated last year. MANY bikes have been using the old Rotella oils with great results for years, and back when I was active on Shell's forums I saw numerous statements from them that they had no friction modifiers or other additives that would in any way interfere with our wet clutches. However, they could not meet the JASO-MA oil standard for motorcycle use (primarily a wet clutch friction standard) due to a slightly high ash content. JASO-MA requires max 1.2, and old Rotella dino had 1.4. Well, the new reformulated Rotella 15W-40 dino and 5W-40 syn oils DO meet JASO-MA standards now. They are not currently "certified" with JASO, so they are not labeled that way, but I have seen a letter from Shell posted on the GWRRA site. I recently found another copy of it and more discussion on Shell's Rotella forums: http://www.shellusserver.com/ubbthre...age=2#Post3861 Since our bike calls for "API service SE, SF, SG type or higher," and Rotella is SM AND meets the JASO-MA standards, it seems to me this is a GREAT oil for us. Yes, there is a little note in the Caution about wet clutches in the oil change section of the owner's manual that says not to use oil of a higher quality than specified (really not sure here how you could find something of higher quality than "SG type or higher"), but since that caution is specifically about wet clutch slippage, and Rotella now meets JASO-MA, it certainly does not seem to apply. Anyway, that is my choice of oil now that my stock of old Mobil 1 red-top is about gone. Just thought I share the info. Goose __________________
Gary N. Posted August 4, 2008 #15 Posted August 4, 2008 Rotella Triple Protection meets JASO-MA Specs Goose That's good to know Kent. I too am about out of the red cap and I have found the Rotella sync. locally for a pretty good price. About $17.00/gallon I think.

Might have been four litres though.
treeman Posted August 4, 2008 #17 Posted August 4, 2008 what wrong with Yamalube 4 Sae. 10W- 30 20W- 40 ? thats what i use $ 4.65
hig4s Posted August 4, 2008 #18 Posted August 4, 2008 Which Mobil 1 synthetic should I use? Just plain 10W30 synthetic? I personally now use the Mobil 1 motorcycle specific oil even though it is more expensive. I figure if I can afford an RSV I can afford motorcycle oil.. But for many years I used Mobil 1 auto oil in all my motorcycles with no problems. Any Mobil 1 that does NOT say "energy conserving" in the little API circle on the back of the bottle would be fine. You use to be able to tell by the red caps, all red cap bottles were non-energy conserving, but in the last few years they have changed the packaging and you now need to read the back to be sure.
Alex Posted August 4, 2008 #19 Posted August 4, 2008 I called Mobil and asked as customer service rep about their synthetic oil and was advised NOT to use it in a wet clutch skewt. I use Rotella now, as well.
Freebird Posted August 4, 2008 #20 Posted August 4, 2008 I'm going to guess that it wasn't their motorcycle specific oil that you asked about. The MX4T specifically states that is is formulated for wet clutch applications. http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil1_Racing_4T_10W-40.aspx I've used it in 4 different bikes since about 1999 and in my RSV since 1999 with no clutch problems.
