Guest Vermincelli Posted July 29, 2008 #1 Posted July 29, 2008 I was looking at those sweeeeeeet stretch covers but I couldn't come to the point of plunking down $260 bucks for one, so dragged out the old sewing machine (all bachelors should have one hidden away under manly things like car mags, shop rags and gun cases btw) Ran down to the local Mill End fabrics and picked up 3yds of waterproof nylon and some elastic and a couple grommets and went to work. I had to cut the sheet as it laid on the bike to get it to fit, but it is actually nice and snug. I used bungee cords to test the fit but am going to replace them with a bungee/elastic cord that will be a permanent loop. Just toss the cover over the bike, hook the loops around the footpegs and instant rain/sun cover. Total = $23 bucks in materials (already had the grommet pliers) http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j27/Vermincelli/Venture/IMAGE_079.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j27/Vermincelli/Venture/IMAGE_080.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j27/Vermincelli/Venture/IMAGE_081.jpg

mini-muffin Posted July 29, 2008 #3 Posted July 29, 2008 Nice job. Looks really good. The best part was what it cost you in comparison with buying one. Margaret
halfwitt Posted July 29, 2008 #4 Posted July 29, 2008 I think you can make a few $$'s with that! Looks as good as any "professional" cover.

Guest Vermincelli Posted July 29, 2008 #9 Posted July 29, 2008 I was thinking about it. I'm waiting to see how it does first though. Would hate to make some for others and then "RIPPPPPPP". it falls apart, lol. I was really impressed with the Geza covers. Those things are pretty slick, but expensive. http://www.gezagear.com/ mine isn't as stretchy
MikeM8560 Posted July 29, 2008 #10 Posted July 29, 2008 Say that looks great! I couldnt have done better myself
nkbjones Posted July 29, 2008 #11 Posted July 29, 2008 Let me put my name in 1st for a 2nd Gen variety if you make them. It looks really good.
Guest Vermincelli Posted July 30, 2008 #12 Posted July 30, 2008 I'd need to sit down with a 2nd gen and figure out the layout. At least I have this one that if I decide to replicate I can just unstitch and use as a pattern. (and could actually clean up the edges. Never try cutting cloth while it's hanging on a bike and the wind is blowing and you have a lit cigarette in your mouth) Tonight I'll give it the water test and see just how "waterproof" the material really is.
kantornado Posted July 30, 2008 #13 Posted July 30, 2008 Very nice job, you done did gooder then the ones seen at meets..........Ron
Rocket Posted July 30, 2008 #14 Posted July 30, 2008 WHen do we start lining up for orders! better get that sewing machine warmed up, youll have all the VR's wanting them now...... KiteSquid Posted July 30, 2008 #15 Posted July 30, 2008 I have three sewing macines!!!! I too would like to make one, but for a 2nd gen bike.....
RoadKill Posted July 30, 2008 #16 Posted July 30, 2008 Tonight I'll give it the water test and see just how "waterproof" the material really is. I might suggest you treat it with Coleman's camp dry or a similar waterproofing product. I have had success with it significantly improving the waterproofness with Nylon jackets, rain suits, bags and such. Its pretty cheap and easy. Just soak it down with spray hang it up till its dry then use it. only need to repeat about twice a year.
Yama Mama Posted July 30, 2008 #17 Posted July 30, 2008 I think that you did a very nice job on your cover. Thanks for sharing. Mama:hurts:
