Trailer Wiring

Next weekend I'm picking up a gently used Piggybacker trailer. I would like to get the componets to wire it this week but I have no clue on what is needed. Can someone out there point me in the right direction on this.

Go to Pep boys or Advance auto and get a generic Hoppy unit. I don't know the exact part # (someone will chime in with it), but you want the unit that has a direct battery feed and isolates that trailer wiring from the bike. It is pretty easy to install.

 

I tried the modulite 1st and got a bad unit, several others seem to have had the same luck with the modulite.

Maybe they changed thier product since this was posted, but I would think they would tell us they changed...???

From what I have seen in other threads it appears that many use the Hoppy unit. It's strange that their web site does not recommend it for motorcycles. Anyone else out there use the Hoppy unit and let me know how you like it.

I have the modulite on mine..I dont know if it really makes a difference but mine says it is for LED lights which I have on my trailer and rear lights,hooked it up per instructions Freebird has posted in TECH section and everything works great. Here is whay it says on Etrailer.com (

4-pole trailer connector is 60" long from converter box

Pigtail leads measures 18" long - passenger wire (green) measures 72" long

Will work on vehicles with LED taillights

Capacities: 4.2 amps (tail); 2.1 amps (stop/turn)

One More Question ? Does your trailer already have installed plug for lights, or we have to do all at once. As Tom Said you better install LED Lights on your trailer, just to relief charging system. If is wiring and harness connection already installed on your piggy, then we have to match existing plug. Is it 4 or 5 prong, can you post couple pics, so we can have clue where to start , and give you best advice. Once again I'll be more then happy to do that work for you in Asheville.

OK, Just get of phone with Piggy Backer Tech Support, and they said : they use 4 Wire trailer Plug. So you gonna need one of those:

I think that the #xx255, is the one that I used. The instructions in the box said nothing about motorcycles, but I can tell you that it works great. I had much better luck with this unit than the modulite.

The hoppy works fine and you can pick one up at your local Autozone for less than $20.00.

It will work with any system that has separate amber turn signals-which is what our bikes have.
