I took my 83 Standard out for a short ride last night and the turn signals just stopped working. The lights and the indicator do not come on at all. I checked the fuse and its fine. My hazard lights work as well as everything else electrical is fine.

I suppose I need to give in and buy a service manual for this thing. I have the pdf manual for the 1300 that someone here was kind enough to send me a while back, but I'm not sure if the componets are the same, as well as the wire colors etc.

Here are a few questions I could use some help on. My bike is scheduled to get state inspected for license renewel next week, so I'm in a bit of a jam to get these turn signals working.

Does the 1200 Standard have a self canceling device?

Is there a relay wired between the switch and the flasher unit?

Where is the flasher located?

Electical troubleshooting is generally one of my strong points, I'm just not sure what componets this bike has and where the heck are they?

Any help mucho appreciated!

Tim,

Sorry I can't answer to many of your questions but I'm sure someone will jump in here and help you out. I can say the 84 standard I had did have self canceling turn signals.

The flasher & canceling unit are side by side in the left fairing area mounted on the inner side of the splash guard, remove the whole left side glove box assembly or radio assembly which ever you might have and you will see them just under the upper vent tube area.

I would first try a different flasher as they will make the system go dead with no turn signal on either side(no lights),or they will just leave a solid light on with no flashing.

should be able to use a #552 flasher which will work on most any vech.or cycle and not that high $ either.

I'm not positive; but i think you can access the flasher and canceling unit by removing the signal light (if your fore-arsm arent too large). Part of the canceling system us a sensor in the inst panel that detects the speedo speed to cancel at 30 Mph, I was going to sugest that you check the E-flashers; but you have done that...........:confused24:

I just picked up an 84 that has a similar problem. Turns out to be a bad connection in my case. Under the fairing one of the connections has a cracked connector. It sometimes works and other times doesn't. I too need an inspection sticker so I'll have to get to this in the next week or two.

Yes the 1200 s have a self canceling signal.

Pretty sure there is a relay - not sure where it is relative to the Flasher though.

Flasher switch is inside right side fairing facing toward the handlebars

Flasher unit is under fairing

I have a service manual who's binding has come apart but all pages are in tact. Let me know if it's something you'd want.

Turn signals and emergency flashers are on different circuits and have different flashers. On my 83 Royale the turn signals would come on but not flash. I screwed with them for some time replacing both the flasher and the self cancelling unit to no avail. I finally just left the self cancelling unit unplugged and now the signals work but they must be manually turned off after making your turn. Inconvenient but better than trying to turn the signals on and off to make them flash while sitting at a light while holding in the clutch with the same hand.

This is why I keep telling everybody, to pull apart Every Electrical Connector on these Old Bikes and Apply a good " Electrical Contact Cleaner "

Thanks folks for all the input. I ended up unpluging the self canceling unit (once I finally found the darn thing) and now they work fine.:)

I'm confused about where the self canceling unit is and since my turn signals quit working last night, I'm anxious to try this solution. (The fuse is good.)

Is it on the left or right? Is it beneath the radios or do I have to open up the front of the bike?

Does anyone have a drawing or picture?

Thanks.
