Guest hamdavid Posted July 25, 2008 #1 Posted July 25, 2008 (edited) Hey Guys, The bike i am getting is an 84/85 venture and yes I dont know the owner doesnt either he is going to find title and see it is the blue one so i say 85. It has been parked for over 3 years and I am wondering what i need to do and what order. I was told to empty gas out and change oil and filter, I was also told to take plugs out and pour a lil oil on topp of pistons then turn it over with them out to make sure cylinder is well oiled. Redneck Posted July 25, 2008 #4 Posted July 25, 2008 I would drain the gas put in fresh gas start it warm it up good then change all the fluids. If you change the oil without starting it all the carbon will be settled after 3 years sitting and most will stay in the engine and mix with the new oil. I would not put oil in the cylinders it will just foul the plugs and make it hard to start.
mtman Posted July 25, 2008 #5 Posted July 25, 2008 Alot of what you do will depend on its condition. I just brought mine back from the dead but nearly had to overhaul it. You might be luckier. Is the battery good? Were stabilizers used in the fuel? If not, your carbs are probably going to have varnish in them. Redneck is right about the oil. You're gonna end up with a couple of oil changes anyway. As the crud is picked up in the bottom of the case, it'll get dirty again real quick. GeorgeS and the other guys on here gave me some good pointers but a lot will depend on how bad the bike is. Do the brakes work or are they all gunked up? Things that were useful for me was some SeaFoam, carb cleaner, brakefree, CRC electric contact cleaner, and some liquid wrench. New plugs, fuel & oil filter, and some brake fluid should get ya going. MiCarl Posted July 25, 2008 #6 Posted July 25, 2008 I vote for oil in the cylinders. Much better to risk fouling a plug than to break a ring. If it were me, I'd put in 10w40 or other light oil and let it sit overnight. Crank over with plugs out and grounded or ignition disconnected. I'd also flush the brakes and clutch system with fresh brake fluid. New tires - no matter how good the old ones look.
cliffno350 Posted July 25, 2008 #7 Posted July 25, 2008 I agree with oil in cylinders and spining over with out plugs mystry oil works well for this, bike will smoke a bit after start but oil in cylinders will help with rings not sticking, just my two cents
