igya Posted July 24, 2008 #1 Posted July 24, 2008 Just wondering if the bags and trunk from an '86 will connect right up to an '85. I can't imagine retooling for bags that are a little bit larger.

You'll need to swap out the mounting rack for the trunk. The mount for the bags on each side can be removed and the saddle from the '86 are permanent. Bag guards need to be swaped out. But... it can be doene and several have already been down that road. Since you already have have the larger trunk on the '85, why not concintrate on the replacing just the saddles. That way the trunk can be removed, and you've gained the extra storage of the bigger saddles??

Will the '86 bags, slip right on the '85 removable mounts?
Condor Posted July 24, 2008 #4 Posted July 24, 2008 Thanks Condor! So, you are saying that the bag mounts on the '86 are permanent. Will the '86 bags, slip right on the '85 removable mounts? Nope, different mounting system and bag guards. All I'm saying is that I'd keep the 85 trunk and permanently mount the 86 bags if you are shooting for more storage room.. You will need to pick up a set of 86 saddle bag guards, as they're what the saddle bag permanently mounts to. As far as the quick release detach mounts that hold the 85 bags you can leave them on, but they serve no purpose. That area is covered by a plastic molding on the newer 86-93's. To make things sanitary you'll need to change out the rear fender and bumper. I'm sure there are other areas that need to be addressed and you're just going to have to jury rig as you go.

You made up my mind for me. I'm sticking with what I have. Duffle bags are cheap and work pretty good. I appreciate that Condor. By the way Condor, what are those little things on the leading edges of your wings? Can't quite make them out.
Condor Posted July 24, 2008 #6 Posted July 24, 2008 By the way Condor, what are those little things on the leading edges of your wings? Can't quite make them out. Transmitters. That way I can keep in touch with everyone on a group ride.....
