A FEW WEEKS AGO MY 93 STARTED TO BACK FIRE WHEN I ROLL OFF THE GAS ONCE IN A WHILE,SO I WAS THINKING IT MUST HAVE A EXHAUST LEAK SOME WHERE, TODAY I WAS CHECKING IT OUT AND FOUND MY COLLECTOR IS LEAKING FROM THE SMALL HOLES IN THE BOTTOM. SO IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ONE I COULD BUY TO REBUILD OR A GOOD USED ONE IM IN NEED OF IT. THANKS!:banana:

I HAVE A MIG WELDER,I WAS JUST TRYING TO FIND ONE I CAN REBUILD SO WHEN I GO TO DO IT,I CAN JUST SWAP THEM OUT. I RIDE THE BIKE EVER DAY AND DONT WANT TO WITH OUT IT.

Taking it out, reinstalling, and taking it somewhere to be welded is the time consuming part. After pulling mine, it took me about a half hour to cut open a flap in the bottom with a thin disc grinder and remove the baffles. The time consuming part was taking It to a welding shop for them to run a bead around the flap. It shouldn't take you more than an hour or so longer repairing your present collector than replacing with another unit, if you have a welder on hand, and you would save around a 100.00 or so for a used one.

Howdy all! My first post, but what a wonderful site for info!!

I have an 83 VR and am trying to get it running again after sitting for 10 years.

Does anyone know what type of stainless this collector is made of?

I tried the magnet trick and it is slightly magnetic indicating type 416 BUT if the 300 series (that is NOT magnetic) is cold formed, it too can become slightly magnetic.

I am going to try my hand at brazing mine (I have a crack forming on the front edge, blowing on the oil sump).

Well I tried my hand at brazing the chamber and I was successful!

I used a flux coated bronze filler rod and a little Bernzomatic brazing tourch (with MAPP gas and oxygen.. plenty hot).

The bronze flowed very nicely and patched up the tear and a few other places that had broken loose.

Saved me $369 for a new one! and I did it myself!

Ok I see about a year ago there was an attempt to figure out how to replace the stock exhaust collector with something cheaper than what Mark from Markspipe was charging. Has there been any action on this since last year?

 

As I see it the front headers curve down and would be pretty straight forward connecting those to a common point. The issue is the rear headers, both from a space constraint and orientation to meeting up with the front header although from a geometry standpoint not too hard with accurate measurements and patience. I see clearing the mounting point of the mono-tube shock as the biggest clearance issue.

 

I know this horse has been beaten but I might have asource for reasonable tubing and someone with a bender and welder. Plus a mechanical engineer on standby with a shop of fancy tools. So I might be able to get a little traction if the interest is still there.
