I am just getting back into riding and would to like to do the basic maintenance myself. The other day I noticed a very small amount of oil at the rear of the bike (size of a silver dollar)the oil leak that is. After reading the forums I believe it is from the final drive? How can I check this out. And if the oil level is low what and how do I replace it? Also what other basic maint. do I need to perform? Oh yeahIhave 05 RSV. Thanks.

It may be the rear shock. They are known to go bad. To check the rear end oil, remove the filler bolt at the top rear of the gear case. The oil should be to the level of the hole. When you add oil and it starts to run out, it's full.

Other routine maintenence that's easy to perform is changing plugs, syncing the carbs, cleaning/changing the air filters, changing brake/clutch fluid, changing engine oil/filter.

The maintenence schedule is in the owners manual. A factory service manual or Climer manual is a must if your doing your own maintenence and repairs.-Jack

As mentioned above, it could be yourrear shock leaking. They are known to go bad and leak and being you have an 05, it is covered under warrenty..

To check to see if it is the rear shock, laying on the floor from the right side "rear" of your bike carefully pull / lift up on the rubber boot on the lower section of the rear shock. If you see oil..it is leaking.

Take it to your Yama dealer and have them replace it.

WARNING: Make sure the bike is level first.............:whistling:

a small piece of 2x4 placed under the kickstand will get it close to level, then remove filler cap and see if oil is near the top of the filler ..hole

If it's not the shock and you determine it is the rear end, it's possible that it's leaking out the drain plug at the bottom. There is a crush washer one that bolt. If it hasn't been changed out after a few changes it's possible that it could be leaking there. You should be able to tell if that's where it's coming from cause of residue.
