Tigger Posted July 18, 2008 #1 Posted July 18, 2008 I was cleaning out the rear trunk the other day and noticed cracks in the ABS where 3 of the mounting bolts are located. Has anyone else had this problem and if yest any issues getting it replaced on warranty? Thanks
Squidley Posted July 18, 2008 #2 Posted July 18, 2008 Seeing yours is an '05 you should already have a trunk reinforcement kit installed on it. The early 2nd gens had an issue with the trunks cracking out and Yamaha retrofitted them with this kit. I would most certainly make sure that the kit is on your bike and be prepared if you have a trunk rack on the bike for the dealer to say that you overloaded it and caused it yourself. Walk in with knowledge about the earlier trunks cracking and the probably will replace it if it doesn't look like obvious abuse
dcgtls Posted July 20, 2008 #3 Posted July 20, 2008 What exactly is the reinforcment kit? Any pics? I added a 2003 Venture trunk and saddlebags to my 1998 Royal Star TC II and after the expense of the paint job would like to do what is needed to protect it. Thanks

Thanks There should be some rectangular metal plates where the mounting screws go through the trunk. These plates are, roughly, 1.5 X 3.5 inches. like Brad said though, on an 05 they should be standard.

Any pics :photographing:would be great as Yamaha now wants the dealer to have another look. I don't know what they are looking for. More when I find out. Thanks

That plate (with the hole in it) is at the latch side of the trunk on both sides. Edited July 22, 2008 by gibvel
Condor Posted July 22, 2008 #7 Posted July 22, 2008 Along with a lot of sure things in this life, like death and taxes, ABS plastic will crack. If cost were no object wouldn't it be great if they built the covers out of Kevlar and Carbon Fibre???
GeorgeS Posted July 22, 2008 #8 Posted July 22, 2008 I just use J B Weld, and thin pieces of Aluminum, or steel, to put patches on Inside of the Trunk, or plastic parts. Works great.

That plate (with the hole in it) is at the latch side of the trunk on both sides. So there is the problem. My 05 does not have those plates. When I look at the inside on the trunk all I see is ABS plastic and the bolt itself. Thanks for the pic. I will use that when I bring the bike in for investigation by the dealer.
gibvel Posted July 22, 2008 #10 Posted July 22, 2008 Wow, supposed to be standard issue from 2000 or 2001 on. Glad you found the problem. They should replace the whole trunk bottom under warranty. Wonder if the trunk comes on the bike in the crate or if that something the set-up guy puts on. If so, he done forgot them.
Sideoftheroad Posted July 23, 2008 #11 Posted July 23, 2008 (edited) Mine is a 1999. The original owner said he didn't do anything. I need to check. From my understanding Yamaha doesn't manufacture the countermeasure kit anymore? Any reason why they don't? The countermeasure kit looks different than those plates from the picture. From my understanding Yamaha doesn't manufacture the countermeasure kit anymore? Any reason why they don't? The countermeasure kit looks different than those plates from the picture. I got lucky. I have a 99 as well but, before I bought it, about 2 years ago, the owner went and Yamaha actually did the repair under warranty. As for the plates, I'm sure you could go to any parts fiche for any recent model year and purchase the plates and install them yourself. Wouldn't necessarily need a "kit". Just checked here and this is what I found: http://www.yamahasportsplaza.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/default.aspx Put in all the pertinent info (I looked up a 2005 and a 2007, both the same parts). When you get to the fiche page, in the pull down on the right, go to Travel bag. The parts are: Left side of trunk (facing forward on bike): #88 - Plate 7 - 4XY-2846P-00-00 - $1.35 #89 - Plate Rubber 9 - 4XY-2849J-00-00 - $0.95 Right side of trunk #90 - Plate 8 - 4XY-2846R-00-00 - $1.33 #91 - Plate Rubber 11 - 4XY-2847T-00-00 - .095 #92 - Bolt Button Head - 92017-06016-00 - .095 The bolts it says you'll need 6 of and the extended price is $5.70. I don't even know if you'll need the bolt or if the existing bolts will work but, just to be on the safe side, I would order the bolts... but that's just me. Here are some other parts sites I go to. If you feel so inclined you could look for the best price. http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_select.asp?vcc=Motorcycles&mfg=Yamaha#SDOWN http://www.motogrid.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/2/yamaha.aspx http://www.flatoutmotorcycles.com/ Hope this helps.
Sideoftheroad Posted July 23, 2008 #14 Posted July 23, 2008 Thanks. I checked last night and I do have those plates in the trunk. I asked the previous owner (bought the bike new) and he said he never did anything to the trunk. So I wonder if a dealer installed them for him and he just forgot (alot can happen over 9 yrs) or they were installed when he bought the bike.
Freebird Posted July 23, 2008 #15 Posted July 23, 2008 In addition to the plates inside the trunk, the kit also included a rubber piece that fit on the outside rear bottom of the trunk between the chrome support rail and the bottom of the trunk. I had the dealer install it on my bike sometime late in '99.
gibvel Posted July 23, 2008 #16 Posted July 23, 2008 In addition to the plates inside the trunk, the kit also included a rubber piece that fit on the outside rear bottom of the trunk between the chrome support rail and the bottom of the trunk. I had the dealer install it on my bike sometime late in '99. I think I listed the rubber plate in my list but it shows it on the inside in the fiche. I, pretty sure that you're right though. I don't remember seeing anything other than the plate on the inside of mine. But, you know, I don't remember any rubber plate on mine, when I took it off to do the CB, either. Hmmm
Freebird Posted July 23, 2008 #17 Posted July 23, 2008 Yea, it is definitely on the outside. I can take a picture when I get home Thursday if anybody needs me to but it's easy to see. Just look at the rear underside of your trunk where the chrome bar supports it. There should be a rubber spacer.
gibvel Posted July 23, 2008 #18 Posted July 23, 2008 May just have missed mine or it didn't register when I did the CB. I'll have to look for sure. So, I guess, the rubber pad in my list goes on the outside of the trunk while the metal plate goes on the inside, unlike what is shown in the parts fiche. Thanks for the addition Don!
dcgtls Posted July 25, 2008 #19 Posted July 25, 2008 The rubber in your list goes between the plate and the trunk bottom, it is the same sixe as the plate. The other rubber piece that was mentioned id two-sided taped to the rear outside bottom of the trunk and goes the entire width of the trun and does a slight wrap around the corner.

Yup, this is what I have. There is a thin rubber "plate" under the metal plate in the trunk on mine. Then there is a thicker rubber "bumper" that runs from left to right across the width of the trunk on the back rail of the bracket. This part would be: #87 - Damper - 4XY-2847N-00-00 - $10.33 on the parts fiche under Travel bag. So there you have all the parts necessary to do the trunk upgrade.
Tigger Posted September 4, 2008 Author #21 Posted September 4, 2008 Well it took a long time but as expected Yamaha came back to the dealer and said not covered:95:. Apparently my VIN is not one of the bikes covered by a service buletin. So of course they are blaming over-loading. I guess 2 helmets is too heavy for the trunk. Now to decide if I fight them on this? May be I should just fix it myself and get it over with. Thanks everyone for your comments much appreciated.
sarges46 Posted September 4, 2008 #22 Posted September 4, 2008 The trunks and saddle bags are rated for what.....20 lbs each. You would be hard pressed to get 20 pounds in those things unless its a single heavy item. Also the bike should have the plates and yours doesnt. This should be a no-brainer for Yamaha....oops....there I go talking common sense about a company that doesnt use any half the time. I would fight it....thats too expensive an item to let them get away with not covering it. I cant see two helmets making any differance as you wouldnt be riding with two helmets in there normally...would you? Even so they are not that heavy.
Tigger Posted September 8, 2008 Author #23 Posted September 8, 2008 Just spoke to the dealer. He stated that I was not covered by warranty as Yamaha is saying that cause is overloading. I'm obviously not happy with the decision. Dealer explained that Yamaha told him to look for my VIN on a service bulletin dating back to 2000 and if the VIN is not there then it's not covered. What great service I got. He just told me to contact Yamaha directly if I wanted to go further. Hell he can't even give me a number to call. So I looked it up on their web site and wrote them. Now to sit and wait for an answer. How could the dealer not catch the fact that a 2005 VIN would not show up on a 2000 service bulleting. Great service I guess. Thanks for all the comments. I will post a follow-up when I hear back from Yamaha.
Tigger Posted October 7, 2008 Author #24 Posted October 7, 2008 Now to close the loop on this one. I received a call this last week and was told that the trunk was on order. I guess my email to Yamaha had the desired effect. Now to find time to bring the bike in to have the trunk replaced. Too bad the weather is starting to change. Why must we have winter?
gibvel Posted October 7, 2008 #25 Posted October 7, 2008 Cool, great to hear that they're going to replace the trunk bottom for you.
