08 Venture, has about 650 miles. Can't get it to the shop until next Wednesday. Do I need to continue being aware of the "break in" period until the starter oil is out or should I not really be too concerned about it and ride like I normally would.

 

Also, the radio buttons are becoming non-responsive, what do I do about that?

I did my own service but dealer (most ) do not cre if you are over..The radio,make them repair it..5 year unlimited mileage warranty

Dont sweat it, mine is due for the 600 mile change too, but it will have more like 1200 on it when I finally can take it in Tuesday. I will do this just because of the warranty and not so much that I trust the dealer.

I had unresponsive radio buttons. The problem turned out to be connectors that just needed re-seating. They were not apparently loose, but pulling them apart and re-connecting them resolved the problem. Using some dielectric grease in the connectors would be good, too.

 

The connectors are inside the fairing. Have the shop do this for you when you get the 600 mile service done.

My new RSTD was purchased last week and now has 630 miles on it and is due for the 600 mile service. I don't see anything on the checklist for service due, that I can't do myself. I've ordered one of the Carb Tunes, can change my own oil and filters, etc, and have a Sears MC jack already with one of the Carbon_one lift adapters on order.

 

BUT, I want to keep my warranty valid. Do I have to take it to a dealer and pay for the 600 mile service? And all the scheduled services thereafter until the end of the 5 year warranty period?

 

I'm willing to keep a signed and dated log book with the bike to indicate when and what work I did on it.

The bike is covered under warenty no mater who does the service. But keep in mind, The dealer is the first step in getting waranty work done. So it is best in my opinion to atleast purchase your supplys from them. And while you are there visit with the service manager and the guy who sold you the bike. They will go a lot farther in pushing an iffy claim if they consider you number one, a good customer and number two, someone they call Friend. And keep your reciepts and log book up to date. There is a service record in the back of my Venture owners manual so I am sure it is the same with yours. I also write the milage of the service on the reciept. just cause I have OCD

Radio Buttons

This is a known problem with the 2008. I had to have my handlebar switch replaced and the dealer mentioned he had done likewise for other 2008's.

 

 

Warranty

As my dealer told me you don't have to take it back to them for all service to maintain the warranty, BUT make sure you keep very good records and receipts of everything you do buy (oil, filters, etc). However, he was also honest and said those who do service their bike with him (or at least buy all their maintenance products) he will push a lot harder with Yamaha if there ever is a problem in the future. Basically, he has to make some money off you to stay in business - if he doesn't make a little money off you what incentive does he have to do extra for you when you have a problem.

 

And is keeping the dealers in business a real issue - I say yes. We have lost at least 5 dealers in the Greater Toronto Area / Southern Ontario area over the past year - one dealer had been in business close to 40 years.

I hear ya about keeping the dealers in business and making friends with them. I went ahead and got myself scheduled in at 10am tomarrow morning. He'll do the 600 mile while I wait. Said it would take less than 2 hours. I guess there was a cancelation because of the incoming inclement weather and possible snow due about then... brr. Its not too far, about 15 miles.

 

Maybe he'll let me observe.... That wouldn't be bad for my education.

 

But I'll definately plan on doing most of my own routine maintenance, and keep the receipts for oil, filters and other parts attached to a dated log.

Yamaha has been really good about standing behind the warranty for me....even though I had to contact Yamaha myslef once. IMHO, I would think Yamaha would have to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that any damage was caused because of poor/lack of maintenance
