Racso Posted July 17, 2008 #1 Posted July 17, 2008 Hi Everyone. I am the proud owner of a 2008 RSTD I picked it up last Wednesday and am comming very close to my 1st service. My manual says change oil and filter as well as changing gear oil in rear end. I went to the dealer to get oil and filter and was informed that there are 2 drain plugs on the engine. Is this true? it seems odd to have 2 drain plugs. If there are 2 where are they, and are they both easy to get to? Thanks for any advice Racso
Gary N. Posted July 17, 2008 #2 Posted July 17, 2008 There's only one engine drain plug that I know of. The Road Stars have two though. Maybe they were confusing yours with the Road Star which has a separate plug to drain the oil tank.
jrcain32 Posted July 17, 2008 #3 Posted July 17, 2008 I have a RSV and I believe it has the same engine as RSTD. As for plugs, there is one for oil and one for rear end gear oil. The gear oil one is on the rear wheel assembly (final drive) area. What oil did the dealer give you? If they are like most Yama dealers they have no clue as to the correct oil for our engines. They most likely gave you 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil in stead of 4-cycle water cooled engine oil. You might want to check.
Racso Posted July 17, 2008 Author #4 Posted July 17, 2008 They sold me the right oil, I did check. The counter guy said that the bigger motors had 2 plugs and he thought mine would also. thanks for the help Racso
flb_78 Posted July 17, 2008 #5 Posted July 17, 2008 One plug and One filter on the engine. Doing the oil change on a RSTD or RSV is literally a 15 minute job with a 10 minute beer break thrown in. This is the easiest oil change I have ever seen.
Squeeze Posted July 17, 2008 #6 Posted July 17, 2008 Maybe he's refering to the lowest 6 mm Bolt on the left rear Cover. This is a Drain Plug for the angeled Gears. But there's not much Oil to drain, maybe a Coffee Cup comes out there.

But there's not much Oil to drain, maybe a Coffee Cup comes out there. I have seen this bolt mentioned before. It is true that there is a copper washer on it for some reason - typically that is for an oil seal - but that bolt hole on my 05 is a blind hole! When I had the cover off to seal a slight oil leak I even put a straw up to the hole to blow in it and proved there is no opening. Come to think of it, however, I did not closely examine the cover to see if there was some access hole for the oil in there. Has anyone actually drained oil from this bolt? Sounds like maybe Squeeze has, since he knows the volume. I do know that no oil came out of any hole when I removed the bolts, but it sure dumped all over my garage floor when I pulled the cover loose! Goose
Squeeze Posted July 17, 2008 #8 Posted July 17, 2008 I dumped Oil often on all the V4 i'm working on. 1Gen and a Lot of Maxxes. Never had a 2Gen in my Shop. Freebird mentioned at his Bike also he has drained Oil out of that Bolt. Maybe Yammi didn't open that Hole enough at some Point in Years. On the other Hand, maybe it's just your Bike? When there is the Copper Washer Seal, there should be Oil coming out.
piper Posted April 15, 2009 #9 Posted April 15, 2009 It all so could be the drain hole is at the top of that hole that is why you could not fit the store throw
Reshired Posted May 11, 2009 #10 Posted May 11, 2009 Only one bolt on the bottom. One 17mm wrench can both remove that bolt and the K&N filter. Refill with 3 and a half quarts of oil. I know the book says 3.9 but that is too much. I use Moble one 4T oil in my 08 RSTD. Nice bike! Enjoy!
