Lately I've noticed something peculiar and was wondering if others out there experience the same or am I just experiencing something coincidental.

 

With this scoot and my '85, I've generally brought the oil level up to somewhere between half and the top mark on the sight glass. Due to other readings on this sight related to oil level and oil leakage/seeping, etc... I've been allowing the oil to go below the middle point...almost as low as the bottom mark. Cool... I don't get any oil leakage anywhere any more but I've also noticed that the whole engine seems to run a LOT quieter, smoother, and seems quicker.

 

Anyone else notice this?

When I had my 89. I had the dealer change the oil every time only because I had to have other things done to the bike and the oil change time coincided with the other things.

 

On the ride home, I could ALWAYS tell when they'd over filled the bike. There was a noticeable vibration to the bike at highway speeds. I'd dump the extra and she smoothed right out and, as you said, I think it seemed like it moved a little better as well.

This has to do with the internal Pump Effects which every Motor has.

 

When a Tuner starts to soup this Thing up, one of the first Things is to increase the Windows between the Cylinders underneath the Sleeves. But, if you look into this V4, you will find not so much Possibilitiy to do that. In Fact there's nearly none.

 

A higher Oil Level will shorten these 'Windows' almost to nothing, without having the Crankshaft plunging in the Oil and foaming it up. This is also the Reason why these Engines easily start to pump excessive Oil into the Airbox when the Oil Level is high and the a certain Amount of Power is demanded.

Anyway, I was wondering at what point in the sight glass the oil level would be when we might be in danger of oil foaming and possible engine damage (or would it be so low we wouldn't even see it)?

any where between the lines with the bike standing up straight is fine. should be about half way between the lines when the engine is cold and a couple of minutes after you run it, and shut it off. the oil will expand when it gets hot and read slightly higher. bill
