jprider4life Posted July 15, 2008 #1 Posted July 15, 2008 Hello to all and let me just thank you all for helping me with this question. I'm looking into getting a trunk rack to be able to carrie extra stuff can anyone tell me how much weight can I put on top of the rack and is it a good idea to get it. thanks again for the responds from all.
philmartin Posted July 15, 2008 #2 Posted July 15, 2008 Its always nice to have one. When the wife and I go on trips her stuff usually takes up the 2 sides and the trunk. So my stuff ends up on the rack.
Guest BluesLover Posted July 15, 2008 #3 Posted July 15, 2008 I have one (trunk rack) on mine and use it a lot. I have a Kuryakin bag that I strap to it and we use it on all of our longer (3+ days) trips. As for the weight ... I put the heavier stuff in thre trunk, but I do pack that Kuryakin bag with a lot of clothes. Every one in a while, I'll also use some rubber netting to add even more stuff (e.g. jackets that have been removed because its too hot) on top of the Kuryakin bag. Here's a picture to show you how loaded up I've had her (and to this date, no problems have been found): http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b320/BluesLover55/2007%20trips/New%20England/?action=view¤t=DSCF2194.jpg Cheers, P.S. My trunk rack is NOT the Yamaha OEM one - I have one that is designed for the Gold Wings.
royalstarjac Posted July 15, 2008 #4 Posted July 15, 2008 I believe the max load the Yamaha rack is rated for is 20 lbs. I have one and it does come in handy.-Jack
bobcat Posted July 15, 2008 #5 Posted July 15, 2008 I use my trunk rack to put on something thats bulky but on the light side.....You don't want it too heavy because you'll want to often open your trunk and if the lids too heavy it makes it ackward to deal with....I found that out the hard way
VTirelli Posted July 16, 2008 #6 Posted July 16, 2008 I pack really light stuff in our rack bag. We got the one from Yamaha.....no more than 20 lbs though
RoadKill Posted July 16, 2008 #7 Posted July 16, 2008 I pack really light stuff in our rack bag. We got the one from Yamaha.....no more than 20 lbs though My Yamaha rack had a label on it said 25lbs, I thought. Of course I took it off imediately. However, we just got back from a 4 day trip and going and coming, I be the back I had in there had a WHOLE lot more. It was a Kuryakan GRand Traveller, fully expanded.
Guest JGorom Posted July 16, 2008 #8 Posted July 16, 2008 My Yamaha rack had a label on it said 25lbs, I thought. The Label is still on my Yamaha rack...it's 10 Lbs. Max.
Mariner Fan Posted July 16, 2008 #9 Posted July 16, 2008 The Label is still on my Yamaha rack...it's 10 Lbs. Max. Mine too! I took the sticker off so now I can carry more weight.
PBJ Posted July 16, 2008 #10 Posted July 16, 2008 I have a Rack on my old Venturer and have used it often but its good advice to make sure the trunk is packed full. This way the weight of the pack on the rack is resting on the contents in the trunk and not just resting on the empty trunk lid without any support underneath. It could cause stress fractures around the mounting bolt holes.
Condor Posted July 16, 2008 #11 Posted July 16, 2008 The Label is still on my Yamaha rack...it's 10 Lbs. Max. Ditto here too...but it may be a 1st vs. 2ndGen thing???
RoadKill Posted July 16, 2008 #12 Posted July 16, 2008 Oh yeah I remember now. 10LBS you are right. Don't know where I came up with 25. Might have been a luggage rack on another bike. Anyway, doesn't the trunk say a max of 20lbs? I figure this weekend we had easily 60 lbs between the trunk and the rack. Wasn't real comfortable with that and that is why I started the post on a hitch rack and am on the prowl for one. Jay
Ozark Posted July 16, 2008 #13 Posted July 16, 2008 I pack all of the heavy stuff that I can in the saddle bags, then lighter stuff in the trunk, and if needed, the bare minimum on the trunk rack. These bikes are top heavy as it is without piling anymore weight than needed on top of that. If it's too heavy, I just tell my lovely wife to eliminate something, i.e. iron, hair dryer, ironing board, six pairs of pants, etc. :rotf:
Guest Dandy1 Posted July 16, 2008 #14 Posted July 16, 2008 The trunk rack is a good accessory just because it gives you something to open & close the lid with! Keeps the lid from getting all scratched up. We usually pack the bike cover and rain suits and a pair of the wifes shoes in the bag on the trunk rack so we don't have to dig for them when it starts raining. They are the lightest things too. Ride Safe!
