Freebird Posted July 15, 2008 Share #1 Posted July 15, 2008 OK folks, I know that I'm WAY late in finally getting this contest started but it's just been very busy lately. So I am going to keep it simple. I REALLY need your input as to where you would like to see the 2009 International Rally held. So, all you have to do is reply to this thread as to WHERE the rally should be held and WHY you would like to see it held there. Now I know that some of you will agree on certain places and that is fine, your recommendation does not need to be unique but you DO need to at least briefly explain your reason. Now this does not mean that the rally will be held at any particular place. Even if many of you agree on a location, we still need folks from any given area to step up and take charge of it and if nobody does, then we have to look elsewhere. So, this contest will run for 1 week. The winner will be randomly selected from all of you who post your recommendations to this thread. The winner will receive a $100.00 gift certificate from New Enough. http://www.newenough.com/

WilCruise Posted July 15, 2008 Share #3 Posted July 15, 2008 I'd like to see it in Tennessee. Western preferably. Lots of good riding, usually reasonably good weather. Opportunities to create rides covering any of: Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi from there including all of the great rides and destination within Tenn. Also a fairly central location so should be accessibly by many. I think we have a pretty large group of members from that area as well.
bongobobny Posted July 15, 2008 Share #4 Posted July 15, 2008 Well, seeing as we sort of catered to the NorthEast crowd this year, how about the SouthWest next year. Maybe northern Arizona like Flagstaff. There would be some really spectacular rides in that area. Another possibility would be southern Utah which would be in the northern Grand Canyon area but with Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park in the area rides would be a real treat! Guest MkyMous Posted July 15, 2008 Share #5 Posted July 15, 2008 Hey all, I Love the Northwest Arkansas Area. Lots of Beautiful Rides and plenty of other stuff for everyone. My vote is Arkansas.
mountainhorsega Posted July 15, 2008 Share #6 Posted July 15, 2008 The most motorcycle friendly city I have ever seen.
Guest Dandy1 Posted July 15, 2008 Share #7 Posted July 15, 2008 My vote is northern Arkansas. These are many things to do and see and you can't see it all in a week. Great 2 lane blacktop roads and friendly down home folks! There is anything you want to do weather it be Branson, Eureka Springs, Mtn Home or Springfield MO. to Hot Springs. I'd be glad to do what I can to help out.
FJR Rider Posted July 15, 2008 Share #8 Posted July 15, 2008 How about the LaCrosse WI area...great roads both sides of the river...bike friendly communities...good campgrounds....good hotels/motels... Fairly large population of Venture riders in the area.
gibvel Posted July 15, 2008 Share #9 Posted July 15, 2008 (edited) I think I could go for Arkansas or the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Both are "fairly" centrally located and SD has some nice roads in the north west part of the state. Edited July 15, 2008 by gibvel
TESchoener Posted July 15, 2008 Share #10 Posted July 15, 2008 I would like to nominate the 'Southeastern-Central Ohio' area. Maybe Columbus, Zanesville or Lancaster. The riding is SPECTACULAR in Southeastern Ohio. There is a twisty technical ride called the 'Ohio Dragon' ride RT. 555, as well as Ohio River rides, Wayne National Forest (Hocking Hills), etc. Also the AMA National Headquarters is in Pickerington, OH. The Museum and Motorcyclist Hall of Fame is there. Thanks for listening. Tom
TrainMaster Posted July 15, 2008 Share #11 Posted July 15, 2008 I would like to see the International Rally held in the Black Hills area, perhaps Keystone, SD. If held in June, the weather is generally nice and there is no shortage of wonderful twisty roads. Many sights to see including Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Badlands and Devil's Tower. This year's was rather East; seems fair to go West. Ken

Kidh2 Posted July 15, 2008 Share #14 Posted July 15, 2008 Good old New Orleans Louisiana......It's not just for Mardi Gras There's no better food and entertainment than in Nawlins. French Quarter, music, beautiful scenic rides all around the area, swamp and plantation tours, river boat rides, and there's always some kind of festival going on. Come during crawfish season, which is pretty much all year long, and pinch some tails. The Mississippi gulf coast is just a hop skip and jump away with Casino's if that's your fancy. Floyd Posted July 15, 2008 Share #15 Posted July 15, 2008 I agree with TrainMaster that South Dakota is a beautiful riding area. That's my vote!
Eck Posted July 15, 2008 Share #16 Posted July 15, 2008 Sorry if this is long winded: I suggest we have the 2009 International rally at the “Four Corners”, located in Durango, Co. ( Durango- located in Southwest Co.) http://www.durangoreservations.org/durango Durango Elevation - 6,512 feet above sea level. Climate : Daytime temps in the 70's and 80's, night time lows in the 40's. (summer) Population: Approximately 14,700 in Durango. National Forest - San Juan Mountain Range - San Juan Mountains A suggested ride: The San Juan Skyway The 236-mile loop called The San Juan Skyway is one of the most spectacular drives in the world and should be on your list of "must-dos" when you visit Durango. Starting from Durango, the drive goes up to Silverton, Ouray, and Ridgway then loops through Placerville, Telluride, Rico and Dolores before returning to Durango via Mancos and Mesa Verde. NOTE: We could schedule this ride in "parts" one day we ride from / to and stop to spend the night in a NEW place, then continue on the next day to another point or continue on to Durango… Silverton: For a small town (500 year-round residents), Silverton has plenty of charms. Completely surrounded by mountains. There used to be seven towns in San Juan County. Silverton is the only town still standing. Ouray: Ouray is an amazingly picturesque little town - its nickname is "Little Switzerland." Located in a mountain valley and surrounded by waterfalls, aspens and soaring peaks, Ouray is a great place to spend some time. You might want to try soaking in the numerous hot springs, eating at a gourmet restaurant, or window shopping if you're not in the mood for strenuous recreation. Ridgway: Ridgway lies just to the northwest in a valley that's reminiscent of the Animas Valley near Durango. Geologically they're very similar - red rock cliffs, a lovely river (the Uncompahgre) and similar elevations. The town of Ridgway itself is mellow, but the surrounding area is full of recreation possibilities. Telluride: Gold was struck in Telluride in 1858, putting Colorado on the map. Telluride is home to some of Colorado's best skiing in the winter and is a haven for some of the most exuberant concerts and festivals in the summertime. Almost every weekend year-round there is something big going on in this little town. Situated in a box canyon at the base of Telluride Ski Resort, Telluride is an Historic National Landmark with gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains and beautiful Victorian style houses and buildings. The Ute Indians were the first residents of Telluride. Setting up camp along the San Miguel River. PagosaSprings: Originally home of the Ute Indians, Pagosa Springs was named for its hot springs said to have healing qualities. Pagosa is an Indian word meaning "boiling water." Cortez / Mancos / Dolores: Where the canyonlands meet the mountains sit the towns of Dolores, Cortez and Mancos. Home to Mesa Verde National Park, this part of Southwest Colorado is rich in cultural and natural history. Other area attractions include the Anasazi Heritage Center, Crow Canyon Archeological Center, Photos: http://www.godurango.com/multimedia/photogallery.asp They are not new to bikers in town either: Main Avenue Between 7th & 8th - Main Avenue Between 6th & 7th
jdross440 Posted July 15, 2008 Share #17 Posted July 15, 2008 Arkansas is centrally located and has a lot of scenic highways and biways to tour. There are a lot of motorcyclists here.
Yama Mama Posted July 15, 2008 Share #18 Posted July 15, 2008 This is a tough one, I really love the mountain areas. So I would have to say either Tennessee, Smokey Mountains or Yellowstone National Park area, perhaps the south western area of Montana. All beautiful riding areas. FROG MAN Posted July 15, 2008 Share #19 Posted July 15, 2008 Arkansas, Tennessee all are good. We need central location for the majority of members. Location should have plenty sights to see yet be 1 to1 1/2 day ride from majority of members. Many only take 1 week vacations so location best for a good turnout is a must. Guest Snake Posted July 15, 2008 Share #20 Posted July 15, 2008 My vote goes to North Western West Virginia... Morgantown area would be great... My reasons: It's beautiful here and since I'm temporarily "off bike" I could still make it there in my 15mpg pickup... Maybe it would motivate me to find a way back... AANNDD... I could have everyone over to "The Shire" for a visit... The Shire is our place in Preston county that we are converting from an old mine site to a WV paradise... You can see it here... http://picasaweb.google.com/1bigyeti ... We've worked over 5 years on it and like to show off our labor...

V7Goose Posted July 15, 2008 Share #24 Posted July 15, 2008 Anywhere within a two hundred miles or so of the Four Corners area. This part of the country has some of the most unbelievable geography and phenomenal riding anywhere. Everything from high dessert to huge Ponderosa Pine forests that will take your breath away. And the national parks within riding distance would keep us busy for two weeks if we wanted to! And it does take us to a new part of the continent. I don't live out that way now, but I'd certainly love to take an active part in helping plan a rally there with someone who does. I know Arizona and New Mexico intimately, and I'm pretty fair with Utah and western Colorado. I absolutely love Arkansas too, but we already do a kind of annual rally there every year (see y'all there in September). And if we don't want to go out there, here's an off-the-wall idea: how about real rural West Virginia - maybe deep in the mountains in the central or southwest part of the state? I know that is not centrally located at all, but it would sure be different, and the country is a blast! Goose
TEW47 Posted July 15, 2008 Share #25 Posted July 15, 2008 Fort Payne,Alabama. Little River Canyon & state park. Deepest Gourge east of the Mississippi river. Beautiful area. 1500 ft. deep. Alot of twisty roads. Home of the band "Alabama". Thirty miles south of Chatanooga,Tennessee. Also has several waterfalls one over 100 feet high. Hardly any traffic. tew47
