Guest pophh Posted July 9, 2008 #1 Posted July 9, 2008 I have a 07 venture . i have been looking into tow bars that attach to a trucks hitch and tows with front wheel off the ground. Anyone tried this rig and is it ok with the shaft drive?
1BigDog Posted July 9, 2008 #2 Posted July 9, 2008 In my humble opinion I certainly wouldnt trust a set-up like that. You would be placing most of the weight of the bike on the rear end. Its not a steel rear like a car but much more delicate. I personally have never seen anyone do it with such a heavy bike.
flb_78 Posted July 9, 2008 #3 Posted July 9, 2008 I would get a trailer before that setup. If you're just using to go across town to drop the bike off at the shop or something local, then yeah, it'd be OK, but I would drive any long distances (more then 30 miles) at speeds above 45mph. When the rear tire is turning, the driveshaft is turning and the transmission is turning and it's all turning with the pressure on the wrong side of the gears. Local stuff OK. Longer distances, get a trailer.
Guest pophh Posted July 9, 2008 #4 Posted July 9, 2008 that's all I need it for to go about 30 miles to the shop for service, couldn't see renting a trailer for that.
Redneck Posted July 10, 2008 #5 Posted July 10, 2008 I would recommend checking with yamaha to see if towing is recommended. If the rig is rated for the weight your only problem would be lubrication in the transmission with the engine not running. There is not problem with pressure on the back of the gears that happens with a lot more pressure every time you let off the throttle and shift down.
Brake Pad Posted July 10, 2008 #6 Posted July 10, 2008 Years ago I had one, it was for the use of a chain drive bike, (remove the chain) I for one would not trust the weight factor of the bike
flb_78 Posted July 10, 2008 #7 Posted July 10, 2008 I don't believe there is any oil "pumped" through the trans. I think the gears are in an oil bath. With the front end in the air, there would be even more oil in on the gears. I don't see a problem at all weight wise. The front tire would still be carrying weight in the hitch.
az1103 Posted July 10, 2008 #8 Posted July 10, 2008 I wouldn't do it !!.... Might be less expensive in the long run to just add it onto your AAA or insurance car and get them to transport it. Or rent a U-Haul trailer. I don't know how towing would affect waranty with Yama But Kawasaki would invalidate your waranty.
Squeeze Posted July 12, 2008 #9 Posted July 12, 2008 You will ruin the big Ball Bearing on the outgoing Shaft of the Tranny. That's behind the left rear Cover on the Motor. You need to dismount the Motor and disassemble Motor and the the Shaft. Don't do it ! No need to ask how i came to that Knowledge.
ahoutzer Posted July 12, 2008 #10 Posted July 12, 2008 I just ride mine. Towing is for bikes that don't work, right? Or maybe those of you in the frigid north trying to get away from the snow before putting down the two wheels. For those who possibly can: ditch the truck, ride the bike.
Neil86 Posted July 12, 2008 #11 Posted July 12, 2008 Yup, transmission and middle gear need oil pressure for lubrication...think if you check the owners maual they warn about even coasting with engine off.
