1BigDog Posted July 7, 2008 #1 Posted July 7, 2008 So, I know this has been beaten into the ground over the years but it looks like my 99's rear shock with 55k on it is finally giving up the ghost. The last two days there has been a small puddle of oil under the shock. No, its the shock, not the vent tubes. Since the bike is way out of warranty I was wondering if there is a TSB from Yamaha on this issue. I have not heard of one before but I could have missed it. Also, has anyone here had any luck with convincing a dealer to give you a new shock for self install based on the history of failures. My next move is a Works shock but for now id take a stock shock if I can glean one from a dealer for free under warranty until I raise the needed cash for the Works. Any ideas????
Tom Posted July 7, 2008 #2 Posted July 7, 2008 I had mine go out a month or so ago and Yamaha had them on backorder and could not tell me when they would b released..Long story short, after raising pure HE&& They agreed to pay $338.95,their cost towards a New works Performance shock. I now hav it on and glad I did it,no more worry about the rear shock failing. Good Luck,Tom
Smilin Jack Posted July 7, 2008 #3 Posted July 7, 2008 Jeff, I have recently purchased a new 2008 RSV and I too have a problem with my rear shock. I contacted Rick at Works Performance and he replied to my e-mail saying there is a 4 to 6 week delay on getting an aftermarket shock. My bike is still underwarranty so I called my local dealer and inquired about an OEM shock. The dealer said he could possibly have the shock in his shop by the end of the week...we'll see. At any rate I'm considering replacing the OEM with the Works shock just to eliminate any future problems. I was quoted from Works Performance a price of $625 including shipping. Good Luck, Jack Bruce aka Smilin Jack
1BigDog Posted July 7, 2008 Author #4 Posted July 7, 2008 I got under the bike today and cleaned the area up good. It looks like its NOT the shock but oil coming out of the vent hoses and being forced back onto the shock while im riding. Ill check it in a few more days but there is no oil under the shock now that the bike is idle. There was oil on the floor after a ride. If it was bad it would have leaked while parked. It was also dry under the boot.
