I have taken off work for the next two weeks. Dylan and I will be going to Kitchener for the Rally on Tuesday and will return on Friday.

The following week, Eileen and I plan to get away for a week. We are thinking about just riding down to North Carolina for a few days. I'm thinking maybe the Lake Lure area. If so, I can get free hotel rooms in Black Mountain, Hendersonville, Ashville, Arden, Forest City or Marion. Now bearing in mind that we really like areas that are not too awfully crowded with traffic and etc., which would you recommend. I'm leaning towards Arden at this time but that is just a gut feeling.

Also, any areas that would be BETTER than the Lake Lure area? I'm certainly open to suggestions. Wouldn't even mind going on to the coast but again there is the traffic and TOO MANY PEOPLE problem. We really aren't looking for exiting things to do or shopping but just nice riding, pretty scenery, a laid back time.

Free - Lake Lure is a nice little mountain town - the key word being little. It has a nice park (Chimney Rock) and a beautiful lake (of course), but most roads lead either to an Interstate (I-26), the Blue Ridge Parkway or just outta town.

The best riding in each of the places you mentioned is the Blue Ridge Parkway. There's a section of the Parkway closed between Asheville and Marion, so that would be a little aggravating for you.

My suggestion would be to travel a little further and spend time in Gatlinburg or Pidgeon Forge, Tennessee. You have the Parkway, Dragon and the Cherola Skyway all close by. Gatlinburg will have some of the things you wish to avoid (bumper to bumper traffic, a lot of stoplights). P. Forge is also crowded, but there's more lanes for traffic going through, so it's not too bad.

There's several National Parks in the area that offer great riding. There's also Cherokee and Maggie Valley if you'd be interested in that.

Have a great trip!

Steer clear of Arden, too close to Asheville congested traffic.I live in Marion, nice small town and within 20 miles of the parkway and Lake Lure and all the other GREAT roads in Western NC.Wherever you stay give me a call and we can meet up for a couple thousand miles of rides. We can ride The Tail of The Rooster,an absolute must ride when in the area.

Black mountain is pretty nice. They have a Comfort Inn and a place called Acorn Inn. Plenty of places to go for a nice ride up there. If you're near Marion Rooster lives there. My daughter lives up in that area as well. Here's a link that lists lots of places to go.

Just click on the little flags and it'll tell what road it is and you can click on that to get more info on each road. SR 1151 is pretty nice you can stop in a little place called Saluda. It's a little Victorian town with shops and places to eat and a waterfall not far from it. Plus there's the waterfall run you can take. You can ride to grandfather mountain, Mt Mitchell, Ok I'll leave the rest for others to tell you about.

Hope you and Eileen have a great time if you head out there. I'm sure some of our other members from that area will let you know some more places to go.

Around Boone is a good place. Mt. Airy. Cherohala Parkway a definite must. I'd stay away from Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge - way too many people for me. Dont' know how you can go wrong in the western part of NC

Or I can show you a real pond monster if you come to the coast . Did I tell you we have a great big huge pond ! :missingtooth:

Yesterday I was 20 miles off shore fishing . But that tropical storm is heading for the front door this week .

I just remembered. There's this place up off the Blue Ridge called Parkview Lodge and Cabins. Friendly folks and there's breakfast in the morning. It's Hwy 221 mile post 317 Phone #828-765-4787. We stayed there when we went up for our daughters graduation in May.

If you want a nice ride and you want the mountains, from Asheville toward Black Mountain on 70 takes you by our KOA Campground where this years rally is. Then when you get to Marion, turn up 80 to the Blue Ridge Parkway. When you get there, turn left again and that will take you to Mt Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi. The BRP from Asheville to Mt Mitchell is closed. Heading north on the BRP you will come to Little Switzerland, a MC friendly community and a good place to stay. In fact, there are several places to stay within a few miles of there. Then north toward Boone, you will go past Grandfather Mountain and the Lynn Cove Viaduct. Make sure you stop at the Viaduct visitor center. These places are not very busy on the weekends and even less during the week.

I am about an hour from these places and if you want to have a M & E with several of us that are local, just give us a call.

Sorry folks...but due to not being able to leave until Dylan goes to scout camp and needing to get back before he returns, we will not be there over a weekend.
