I noticed this evening my cord is showing in the center of my rear tire. About 1.5" wide and several inches long. It is an Avon with about 9000 miles and was intending to replace once I got home. Well, it didn't make it.

I am in a hotel room in Erie, PA (it is Saturday night about 9:00). Does anybody close by have a rear tire - even a used Bridgestone will work - and can lend some assistance installing? I don't have a jack with me or the tools needed to remove the rear tire (I can do the labor if someone has the tools).

Anybody available with a tire in the region - please call me at 920-602-0864.

I am still mobile, but don't want to get stranded by risking 700 miles home on this tread.

OK, I added a picture. What do you think of running 700 miles on this?

Thanks.

Man..I hate to hear that. I'm sorry now that I threw away the Bridgestone that I took off a few weeks ago. It had several thousand miles left on it but I just hated it. I'm about 2 hours or so South of you in Oberlin, OH. If you find somebody with the used tire, I would be happy to lend you a hand here putting it on. Sorry I can't do more.

I have jack, tools etc but no tire and like Don, I'm a couple of hours away as well.I'll watch this thread and if you are still stranded tomorrow we'll see what we can do but being Sunday that's gonna be tough. You may be stuck until Monday...

that I can find in Erie, PA via the net. It isn't looking good. BTW: almost nothing comes up for Yamaha dealers in that area. Except this one.

Dennis Kirk will ship overnight if you pay the bucks. If ya have to order a cheap tire and overnight it to the hotel or near by cycle shop.

At Dennis Kirk the Dunlop 404 is 86.99 + 123 to overnight Fed Ex to Erie, meaning it will be there Tuesday afternoon.

Lets hope we can find a better faster, less expensive solution.

BTW: the tire size for the rear on a 2nd gen is 150/90 15

I wish there was more I could do.

There is a Yamaha dealer on Peninsula Drive called Chet Alexs Yamaha. There is another one off I-90, south on Route 8 about 4 or 5 miles called Off-Road express this is the better of the two. Doubt if they will be open on Sunday though. I will do some calling around to some friends tomorrow. One might have a used tire for you. If they do I'll call.

Cycle city built a new facility on Peach street south of I-90 they might be open tomorrow. They are the biggest dealership in the area.:2cents::D

Hate to admit , but HD dealership are open on Sunday . I do have a brand new Michelin Commander for the rear . But I will not be in that area or closet to Buffalo until Monday evening . I'm leaving in the mourning . If you want me to bring it , I can . Just let me know .

Thanks all for the support and offer of the tire. Sorry the first gen wouldn't work. It would probably rotate too fast for my second gen anyway.

I also checked the local yama dealers, and the HD dealer and they are all closed.

If we are not able to locate a tire by morning, I may call the local Walmart and see if they have a car tire. I would likely have to do the mounting, but that's OK (or I would strap it on and limp to bongo's or freebird's.

I have family that lives in Astabula, Ohio (about 50 miles from erie) that I am sure would give you a hand with the tools and a place to work. I can call them in the morning and see if they know of any motorcycle shops in the area that are open on sundays. Will let you know what I find out.

Lat week, we road from Utah to the Northwest Star B.Q. in Post Falls, Idaho. On the way back (on Sunday), we were passing Missoula, Montana when my buddy noticed that his rear tire was showing thread. Of course, since it was Sunday we knew that most everything would be closed - except the Harley dealer.

So, I gave the Harley dealer a call on my cell phone and all that I said, was that we were passing through town when we noticed that my friend's tire needed replacing right away. No, I didn't tell the person on the phone that my friend was riding a Yamaha. The person on the phone sounded very sympathetic and told us to come right over.

When we arrived, the dealer absolutely refused to help out my friend because "their shop wasn't authorized because of insurance reasons to put tires on anything besides Harley's". At that point, the people at the Harley shop just pretty much turned their backs on us. They wouldn't so much as offer us suggestions for local help.

Well ..., we couldn't find any help in that town that night. Fortunately, we were all geared-up for camping, so we spent the night at the KOA and waited for the local Yamaha dealer to open-up the next morning.

It was unfortunated that we just couldn't find a helping hand that Sunday. We knew if we could just locate some of the people associated with STAR, or like the rest of you on this site, that we would be okay. I even had the Venture Riders Assistance List, but found that many of the numbers on the most recent list were no longer valid.

So, I empathize with you. If I were able to assist, I would do all could to help. Even if you road a Harley and were stuck, I would still offer to help. And, I hope that if you have to buy a new tire that the dealer gives you a fair price. My friend had to pay $230 for his tire from the Missoula Yamaha dealer and $100 for the install. I purchased the same tire from Southwest Mototire a few weeks ago for $130. And, it shouldn't have to cost $100 to install a tire on a V-Star 1300 (belt drive).

I just feel badly when people get stuck in tough situations and you know that solutions are available, but they just can't seem to connect to get the help they need. I'm sure that we have all been in those kinds of tough spots. My wishes for the best of luck. Have faith. It'll all work out.

I don't think a Harley dealer could help a 2nd gen anyways. I can't think of 1 Harley that uses a 15 inch rear tire so I don't see why any Harley dealer would even stock a tire that size. I had a tire showing cord in Missouri once on a Saturday night. No dealer was open Sunday. I went to a Harley dealer and found the junk tire pile. I found a tire that would work on the back of my Roadstar. It was actually in pretty good condition. Went to the Petro in Joplin and mounted the tire up in the parking lot. I worked for Petro in Amarillo at the time and was able to use a jack and 2 tire bars. I balanced the bike on the front tire, the kickstand and the jack under the shock.

Jeff, I Wouldn't do that. Stay Where U R and wait to solve a problem. Better Be patient, Then sorry. Cords are wearing way faster then robber, Relax over Sunday and somebody will chime in.

We were told after a little while by that Harley dealer, that they didn't have a tire which would fit (even if they were willing to help), anyway. So, Harley probably doesn't have a tire which would fit it. I just get tired of "brand-attitudes" when it comes to what we all ride. I ride a Venture and many of my friends ride all sorts of bikes because that's what they like to ride - and that's all that matters.

Jeff, if you can wait it out, do the job right. People will step-up as the word gets out that one of us needs a hand.

I'm stuck in a hotel myself right now 1,650 miles from home (on a business trip for a week) in Ypsilanti, Michigan. And, my bike is sitting in my garage home in Utah. But, if I were closer I could at least offer you a place to stay.

Good luck my friend!

Well, need to get some sleep. I suspect (and hope) tomorrow will be very busy. I will post some pics in the morning of how bad the tire is.

I feel like such a dope. We calculated the mileage of this tire over dinner and I started the trip with about 9000 miles. When I went over the mileage in my head before leaving, I forgot a couple of trips - and a couple of thousand miles.

Never again. Stupid hurts.

Added a picture of the tire on the first post. Interested in viewpoints as to whether this would make 700 miles or not.

No. Check out local tire shops for BF Goodrich 155/80R15 or Federal SS657 165/80R15 car tire.

Yup, Walmart opens at 9:00. It will be interesting to see if they will mount it or even let me use their equipment and mount it myself.

Yep , it's that dangerous ! I don't think 100mph tape will help not one bit .

I remember Don's M-day '07 , when Sleeperhawk rear (tire that is) got a bald spot on it . It grew fast . We hobbled on in , but slowed down our speed and took more frequent stops to let the tire cool off . We tried to sweet talk the Mechanic to ride with another rider , but she's too much in love with her "Man" ( OK , where in the heck is the "In Love" smilies ?) .

We will be leaving here in a few hours when the rain path subsides a little . I'll check back in if ya still need the tire . If I do not hear from ya , I'm leaving it here .

Wow, I sure wouldn't try to run that tire 700 more miles. You might push a few, maybe, if you keep the speed way down. See those lighter spots in the rubber in the center? Those areas are right ready to show cord too.

The Avon shows cord sooner than you think it ought to. I came home one day a couple weeks ago and found mine looking just like yours. I knew it was getting worn down, but I thought I had several weeks left in it. I had put around 100 miles on that day. I was instantly grounded. I did ride it about ten more miles in short trips because I just had to get on my bike. But I'd sure be afraid to run it any 700. A wreck just isn't worth it.

You mentioned being willing to do a CT. I put the Federal SS657 165/80R15 on my bike and I'm really liking it.
