Bub Pipe Questions ??

I was just given a set of Bub Sleeper Mufflers that are in great shape except for the chrome end caps (Chrome peeling). I have taken them apart and removed the end caps.

I have (2) questions.

 

1) Does anyone know a good way to remove the chrome ? It doesn't look like it was applied correctly in the first place. I am looking to have them powder coated w/ a high temperature black satin finish. I think it will look sharp on my 05 RSTD (Black/Gray).

 

2) The packing material inside was almost gone, what is the material used ?

Not sure about how to remove the chrome. The problem is the hot and cold cycles on the aluminium tips causes the chrome to let go. I solved it by replacing mine with some HD fishtail tips. They have other styles that would work too. Here's a thread on that topic. You have to scroll down a bit to see how I did it. Post 16.

Thanks for the info Gary. I took the tips to a powder coater today, said they could remove chrome. I am have them coated with a high temperature black textured. I will let you know how I turns out.

Originally, Bubs did not chrome the tips, they were just polished aluminum. For some reason when they started chroming the tips, they didn't appear to get it right and to the best of my knowledge they went back to unchromed aluminum.

 

I think they figured out the right process and started chroming them again. Not sure about the results but you might want to give them a holler and see what they say.

The packing material inside wasn't almost gone they only putt in a little at the end to help the tips but it doesn't help. I you wrap them they will loose some sound.

You might want to yank that small wad of pink house insulation from your pipes while you have them apart. That cheap stuff can/will cause rust eventually. I repacked mine with FMF 4 stroke packing which toned them down a tad. I leave the house early in the morning and didn't want to piss off the neighbors. They still sound awesome,.. just a bit quieter at idle and a little less drone on the road. The chrome on the tips is cheap as well.. mine is peeling under side of both tips. I like the idea of black powder coated tips.. post pictures!

Niiiice. With a paint job like that why did you stop at the tips?... Do the whole exhaust!
