Hey guys, I just bought a home a couple weeks ago and spent two weeks moving to it. I rode my Venture a week ago yesterday to go show a storage building dealer how to get to my place with a new building. I parked the Venture and for the next 7 days worked like a dog moving. Guess what. SOMEWHERE....AT SOME TIME...in the last 7 days I must have dropped my keys. I called the Yamaha dealer and when he found out how old my Venture was....Im sure he fell to the floor screaming... AND YOU WANT WHAT??? Oh well, no help there. He said to take my ignition out and bring it to him but he doubts he can do anything with a bike that old. Second problem...that key works the saddle bags trunk and ignition but there was a second yamaha key on the ring that takes the gas cap off. Bummer. I have not ridden in a week one day and 8 hours and I am having withdrawls big time. This move broke my wallet big time so I need a cheap idea (yeah I know...now you guys are laying on the floor saying ..YOU WANT WHAT???). Well.... any ideas would be welcome.

There was a kid at work who lost his keys. He took his ignition off and took it to a locksmith. The locksmith cut him 3 keys for 40 dollars.

Bummer on the gas tank lock. You may have to take the whole bike up there.

What they said...

Plus you got me thinking, I only have one key myself. Maybe time to go get a couple more made. But I'll have to remember to NOT store them in the trunk.

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out...

The cheep way to do it is to get a key blank.

Remove the locks and remove all teh tumblers.

reinstall the locks.

Now any key, including the blank will operate the locks..... it might be a good or a bad thing, but it is the cheepest way I can think of...

You can make your own keys but it can be time consuming. Take a blank key use a black marker to cover the key put it in the lock and turn it back and forth. When you pull it out you will see marks on the key , file those marked areas out and you have a key.

I keep a spare key, as flat as I can find, in my wallet. Comes in handy if you misplace your keys while out travelling...or just to far from the motel room when loading up and the keys are back in the room.

On some older bikes the key number was stamped on the baffle plate on the lock itself. Maybe not the ignition switch, but maybe one of the other locks.

If you have to take a lock off, the ignition has only two screws, but may be anti tamper - you either have the right bit or you don't. I suspect that taking the helmet lock off will be easiest, though, and if the locksmith damages it, who uses it anyway.

If you find a number on any of the locks, though, the Yamaha dealer should be able to get the key cut easily.

Hey guys, all GREAT suggestions. I will take off my helmet lock and take it to the dealer Monday. That is a great and less painful idea. Thanks millions Greg and all who replied. Many blessings to you all.

with my house key and both car keys, bike key laid out flat

on it and covered with 3 inch clear tape in my wallet.

On this key note (pun intended) I have a question. I have one original factory key to my '84 and several later made ones. The original key opens everything and the others don't. Seeing as how my local Yammy dealers are twits IMHO, I don't do business with them. Seeing the age of the bike what are the odds of finding a dealer that can have keys made from the factory key with the code numbers on it?

Snaggletooth,

as I mentioned in my above post, contact this guy...

I was told that this guy can make a key for any bike and is very reasonable and great service too.

I have never delt with him (no need yet) but from what I have heard, he is a great guy and wants to help others .:thumbsup2:

That may not work, as there may not be as many tumblers in that lock. Not sure but that may or may not be the case. Interesting thing about Ventures that we have discovered is that the blanks seem to be different or something from bike to bike. We found this out when three of us could not even start to insert our keys into each other's bike...

I'm thinking getting the number off of the bottom of your ignition lock may be the best way or pull the lock...

Ok guys, after two weeks of looking for my keys I finally loaded up my bike thursday and took it to a lock and key shop. $105 later.... I had keys. I brought it home and joyfully place it in its place of honor and covered it up in anticipation of a wonderul ride Friday morning after mowing the grass. I got up at 6:00 this morning and a while I was huffing and puffing with my mower a rather playful angel appeared above me name Bubba. This angel called for all hid friends to gather around and watch this feller mow. Bubba says " hey fellers this heres the guy whos been lookin fer his keys two weeks. Watch this". And with those last two words he tosses my keys in front of my lawn mower just in time for me to watch the blade mangle them a bit. Yeah he got quite a chuckle out of me Im sure. Too bad I didnt decide to mow the lawn sooner. Oh well...it was only $105 ..or 26 gallons of gas..sniff sniff..:crying:

Don't know if you're talking about 1st or 2nd Gens here. I have 1 key to open everything - panniers and fuel cap - and to operate the ignition. (2nd gen). I also have 2 spare keys that came with the bike. One is hidden on the bike, and requires a hex key to remove something to get at it. Say no more! As for numbers on locks - can I suggest that you get an engraver and 'destroy' those visible numbers? I could check the numbers on the locks on YOUR bike in a parking lock, walk into a locksmith and have a key cut, go to your bike and ride it away. If you and I can do it, why can't a thief?

The reason they want you to pull the ignition, and take it to them is the key numbers are stamped on the back. See Below. If youcan get in there with a mirror, and the area is clean enough, you could possibily read the numbers and call or send them to http://www.motorcyclekeys.com/ On the gas cap. Try drilling it out to remove it, and I believe?? there's an after market Stant that will work? Another OEM can also be found on Ebay.

Ok guys, keys are made last Thursday. Rode her Friday morning....how sweet that ride was since I havent ridden in two weeks. Now....my new home had a septic tank problem and Saturday morning I called a pump truck to pump it out. I went home to wait on him. He arrived and back up my drive....ALL THE WAY UP MY DRIVE...RIGHT INTO MY VENTURE. Man I was nearly in tears to hear that crunching sound. He promised to get the parts to fix it... but as you know 1st gens are not that plentiful anymore. Anyway.. I sent this afternoon patching her back together. My left blinker is now attached with a zip tie, my tail light is pieced back together and is adorned with 3M red lens repair tape, I was able to bend the crash bars back and bent pushed and straightened until she is now road worthy, not as pretty but thank God she was not hurt mechanically. You know... some years it just doesnt pay to get out of bed.

Man, talk about a crappy adventure.

I wonder if he had any insurance on his truck?

I guess this week I should hear from State Farm on my knocked over bike adventure.
