Overwhelmed with intercom options

Hi, New here, Getting a nice first gen Venture tomorrow, 1983. I will be riding with my wife. We will be using full face helmets. What is a economical (not necessary cheap) intercom for us to use? Main use is just talking back and forth so wired to each other is fine with us. Now if possible a way to plug in a mp3 player so we could both listen would be nice but mainly just her and I talking back and forth. Any suggestions, please?

Thanks

Brian

You have some different options. There is J&M, Edsets and autocom. You will have many different ones to choose from depending on what you are willing to spend.

I think Wingstuff has a reasonable set for about $60-$70. Edsets has an adapter that will allow you to plug in and mp3 player.

If you don't have a CB and want to get one, J&M has a handlebar mounted one that will also store mp3's (I think).

If you have plenty of money to spend, they have bluetooth setups.

My fullface needs a smaller mic so mine will prolly need to be the one from Autocom.

Just seach some of the brand names and headsets onthis forum. You will find a whole lot of threads related to this subject.

Has the J&M head set #HS8154 FF $59.95ea . We use these in our full face helmets and work fine on our 08 Gold Wing & 83 Venture. Found wind noise was a small problem but did a simple fit. use a small balloon or thumb out of a rubber glove and place over the mic unit and it removed the wind noise and still had good sound for speaking.

The J&M unit doesn't actually store mp3's, it has an aux connection you can hook up to your mp3 player or a gps etc... 40 channel CB, 10 weather channels and full intercom...

You did not say if the Venture is a Standard (no OEM radio), or a Royale (OEM radio installed & intercom capable).

If it is the Royale, with the OEM radio setup, you will most likely need the interface cables to hook up the intercom, as that was an option for these bikes. See this thread for more info.

Sorry to hi jack the thread...but has anyone had any experience with the helmetless headsets sold by Lite Electric LLC? My better half and I wear half helmets and we don't want to spend over $200 apeice on head sets.

Some use this http://www.sierra-mc.com/proddetail.asp?prod=IMC%2DHS%2DB40

I have a set and after a while the bug my ears but my wife like them but she doesn't ride much

I tried these http://www.armoredrider.com/mod/product/id_prd/986 they worked good and were comfortable

Then I went with the Scorpion 100 helmet. It has speaker pockets and a retractable visor. I love it http://www.helmetharbor.com/Products/ModelDetails.cfm/Search/Results/ManuID/377/Model/EXO-100

All these options I used this Headset http://www.wingstuff.com/pgroup_detail/30_J_M_Headset_Electronics/2310_J_M_Headset_for_Goldwing_w_2Pc_Cord_Wow_59_99/?goto=%2Fpgroup_list%2Felectronics%2F30_J_M_Headset_Electronics%2Fmfg%2F%3Fpage%3D2 This headset isn't the greatest for HIFI but its cheep and beter then no tunes at all. I like them.

Hope this helps

This year I installed a j&m interatr IV on my bike. So far it has been a nice little unit but I haven't got the second headset so for communications I am not sure yet. I installed it in the right bag with the extensions for rider and pass with the remote ptt switches for both. I also went with the volume control cords so each person could control the level of sound. I have bought the cords for the cb and for the 2 way radio but I don't have the cb yet. I just got the 2 ways at the end of riding season and they work in the back yard. It has a input for a mp3/satt radio and I do have my satt radio installed. I do like the unit so far and one can go cheeper than I did but I wanted everything hidden so just plug the helmet in and go. I will have the headset and cb before riding season and try it this spring. Right now with temps down to -37 it isn't high on my list of needs but my sons 1st christmas is. Pm me if you have any questions and I will do my best to help out.

I also went through sierra electronics for everything but the main unit( I heard about them after I had ordered the main unit for a local dealer) but I would buy it from them. That is where I will get my cb and second headset from.
