The wide ratio gears in the transmission are really too high for the engine, from second gear on up, but especially fifth gear is way too high. The VMX rear gear lowers them by about 11%, and puts the engine a little closer to its powerband letting it run easier. This engine does not like to lug. It likes to rev. The stock rear gear is 33/10, and the VMX rear gear is 33/9.

Lower rear end gear ratio.

Quicker accelerations, and it keeps the engine at an elevated RPM for the same speed compared to the stock rear end.

I will not be changing mine.

I've owned many bikes over the years and the Venture always seemed to me to have the gearing wrong...that is until I had the VMax swap out performed on my bike. Now the shifting is smooth and natural and I have much more torque/power in every gear. No longer do I have to get to 70 mph before shifting into 5th gear. The swap out also improves two up riding...towing a trailer...or simply cruising through town much easier. To me it is the best performance mod you can make on the Venture.

There are other posts on this subject if you care to do a search...much has already been written about it. I am amazed though that more don't do this because it is relatively a cheap way to greatly improve the performance of the bike. I guess if people were to try the difference they then might be sold on it.

Got the stock gears in mine. I'm 310lbs. and I regularly shift into 5th at 40mph, when riding moderatly, with no lug what so ever. If I need to pass I down shift, no big deal.

Guess it's a matter of preference.

By the way, I used to have an 05 Triumph Rocket III, before the Venture, so I know what power is!

I've done the swap and it is probably the single best thing I've ever done in regards to performance for my bike. The RPM range is just perfect for these bikes with the swap. It is especially nice when riding two up in the mountains or bucking a strong head wind. I will never go back to the stock rear end.

It is a straight bolt on if you buy the one from Sportmax. If you just buy a VMAX rear, you will need to have it machined to accept the speedo sensor. Near as I can tell, it hurt about 1 to 2 MPG at the worse and I think actually improves it in some conditions.

I love the VMax swap. The bike just has a better feel to it.

TrainWreck... you may be 310 lbs, but I would still have to call you my 'little' brother. Put a 5 gal jug of water on each shoulder and we are getting close. Before the swap, I could hit 5th at 40 and even roll on a little throttle with no problem. That just isn't the way I like to ride.

Over the 35K miles I have on this bike, I've averaged 31.4 mpg. I did the swap at 31K. I filled up yesterday and got just over 32 mpg on that tank. Weather is hotter, switched to shorter and narrower shield for the summer, opened the lower wind deflectors... so I'm pushing less air right now. Best comparison I can give is at the time of the swap. The 10 tanks before the swap, I got 29.8 mpg. The 10 tanks after the swap, I got 28.3 mpg.

I'm not going to say that everyone should do this mod, but it was the right thing for me to do. I've always liked to ride this bike. Now I like it even more.
