Kregerdoodle Posted June 20, 2008 #1 Posted June 20, 2008 I have been noticing that my key is getting hot, hot enough that when I put it in my pocket after a ride, it will get my attention.. Is this a sign that the switch is going bad???
Gary N. Posted June 20, 2008 #2 Posted June 20, 2008 That would sure be my first thought. Don't wait til it lets you down out on the road in the middle of nowhere.

Squeeze Posted June 20, 2008 #4 Posted June 20, 2008 I sincerly suggest looking into that Issue soon. It's not a Question if the Switch will give up on you, but only when that's going to happen. Has anybody tried to get into the Switch? Cleaning and bending Contacts, expanding the Springs inside the Contacts ? I mean, hey, a Lot of the 2Genners are out of Warranty and that Beast is not cheap. Maybe someone could figure this out and do a complete Write Up on repair/remanufacture this Hassle. On all the other Yamaha Switches i've seen, i was able to dismount the Assembly and clean the Contacts and pull the Springs a bit longer at the Contact Sheets to have more Force on them.

Is this a sign that the switch is going bad??? If your switch is getting that hot you may be running too much amprage through it. Do you have ALL of your accessories on seperate circuits with relays? If not that may be your problem. Most all ignition switches used now are very light and any new circuits need to be put on a relay and not run through the switch. Oh, you will need to change that switch. It's gonna fail on you. Probably sooner than later.

Probably sooner than later. It nearly doesn't matter how much Ampere is going through the Switch. If the Contacts are bad enough(high Resistance) you could have them melted away with as low as 0.5 Amps. It just needs more time to melt.
