Dakota Posted June 18, 2008 #1 Posted June 18, 2008 I just picked up a 1987 Venture Royale with a 2 person sidecar and want to change the sparkplugs, but can't seem to find a socket to fit the hole! I looked at it with a flashlight and the distance between the sprakplug and the wall is very thin. Is there a special way to get these out?
MiCarl Posted June 18, 2008 #2 Posted June 18, 2008 Mine uses 18mm, although that could vary by plug manufacturer. Most general tool sets don't include an 18mm socket. I purchased an 18mm spark plug socket from Sears.
Yammer Dan Posted June 18, 2008 #3 Posted June 18, 2008 3/8 drive 18 mm thin wall U-Joint and rachet Piece of rubber hose about 2 in long. When you get them broken loose push hose over end and you can spin it out with fingers. I don't use the hose but a lot claim it is easier.
Saddle_Bag Posted June 18, 2008 #4 Posted June 18, 2008 Did the scoot come with one of the original tool kits?? If so the yamaha spark plug wrench in the kit works. Maybe not well, but it does work. Keep this in mind when you buy new plugs. Look for a 5/8th inch plug . Joe
Freebird Posted June 18, 2008 #5 Posted June 18, 2008 On my second gen, I use the tool that came in the took kit and then a 17MM socket and ratchet on top. Works great.

bobcat Posted June 19, 2008 #7 Posted June 19, 2008 I just picked up a 1987 Venture Royale with a 2 person sidecar and want to change the sparkplugs, but can't seem to find a socket to fit the hole! Deep 18mm swivel socket or socket w/universal... 3/8 drive.....10-12" extention and rachet..This setup is the easiest way to remove the spark plugs... When installing plugs I suggest putting a thin coat of anti seize on the threads...
Saddle_Bag Posted June 19, 2008 #8 Posted June 19, 2008 Yes Sir, Anti Seize is a must if you plan on taking them out later and leaving the threads in the head. joe
greg_in_london Posted June 19, 2008 #9 Posted June 19, 2008 Yeah the spark plugs are a bugger to get out without a thin wall socket, but once you've got one (or ground one down) then they are quite easy to get out. Someone else with a double adult sidecar - you must be as mad as I am:cool10:
Dakota Posted June 20, 2008 Author #10 Posted June 20, 2008 Thanks to all! I ended up with borrowing the tool kit from my V Star and using the spark socket. It fit good, but had to sit there whit a 17mm wrench to turn it and with that little bit of spce it took along time.
