Sputtering and quitting!

I need serious help! My RSTD, 98, is stuttering on acceleration and at times the engine quits then kicks back in. It seems ok in 1st and 2nd, but begins to act up on acceleration into third. Runs ok once I get to speed, but that's when it quits and restarts. Ideas?

The easiest place to start is looking for vacuum leaks in the intake circuits and inspecting/cleaning the ignition wire connections.

Have the carbs ever been synchronized?

If you've messed with the tank vent tube and possibly gotten a kink in it.  That symptom is exactly what was happening to me after I had everything apart and apparently got a kink in the tank vent tube.  Not sure if that would have anything to do with those other symptoms.  I temporarily bypassed the vent tube (put a short tube down the front to test) and it ran fine.  Had the tank off again day before yesterday and cleaned up the routing for the real vent tube and it's all good now.
