I have just identified an 'Error' 12 on my SVTC.  From what I read online, it is generally stated as an issue on the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) on Yamaha bikes.  Please chime in, if you have had this type of issue of have heard about this error code.  I do have access to the service manual and my task is to determine the location of the CPS.

I managed to take a pic of the error code.  Perhaps I must call the dealership and inquire about Error code 12 and see what they say.  Worst case scenario, I have emergency road side assistance and Geico is willing to tow my bike from home to a shop of my choice.  🤞image.jpeg.22825e527ff2238bf15958715d4528b4.jpeg

I am thinking my 2nd starter went bad again.  My original starter has already been replaced under warranty and due to the recall.

I was just searching a FB group for Error 12 and found 2 posts.  Both bikes had to have their starter replaced.

I agree.  Unfortunately, that is what I am also leaning for.  Starter...  If this is the case, it will be my 2nd starter.  My first starter has been replaced under warranty per the recall a few years back.  The SVTC is already out of warranty, so I might just order a new starter and perhaps a 'starter relay'.  I just hate replacing parts, if I am not certain whether the old part of good or bad.  I am going to call the shop that worked on my bike previously and see if they will replace the starter 'free of charge' since it has only been a few years ago.  I guess it won't hurt to ask.  At any rate, I am hoping to get this issue resolved soon.

Error 12 Update: Called the shop and they stated that they may be able to work on my bike, but they are 2 weeks out.  It is understandable that they are unable to tell me what is wrong without plugging it in their diagnostic tool and determine the issue.  With that said, I am going to handle this myself for the meantime.  2 weeks plus is something I am not willing to wait and beside my bike is already out of the yamaha 5 year factory warranty.

I called Partzilla today and was able to obtain OEM part numbers for the Starter and Starter Relay.

Starter: 2DF-81890-10-00 & Starter Relay: 2DF-81940-00-00.

I have no diagnostic tool on hand, but I plan to replace the relay first and see if it starts and then move on to install the starter.  I think I'll have fun working on the bike.  About to place my order online.

Just pulled the starter out.  I would like to install the new one, but what lubricant is that on the old starter so I can apply it to the new starter before install?  Please advise.

I went ahead and installed the new starter and it started right up.  No more Error Code 12 on the dash.  Nicer weather this week, so ride days are here.  Replaced the starter relay as well, but I am keeping my original starter relay for future use.  It may also be a good idea for me to stock one starter assembly just in case the dreaded Code 12 returns.  I will also look into rebuilding the old starter by a Pro sometime this year.  FWIW, this is pretty common for another starter to go bad on these bikes but it was not really so bad to replace it.

Ride Safe.

Glad to hear you're up and running. Mine has a fuel leak.  Looks like it is below the fuel pump.  Traveling on Business right now and will try to get it int the shop Thursday.

Yes.  At least in our area, the weather is nice and will ride for the entire week mostly riding to and from work.  I've also ordered a front tire this morning for the SVTC and will receive it by Friday.  Saturday install is planned, but that depends on the boss if she wants to do something or go somewhere.

Sorry to hear about your fuel leak.  Hopefully it is just a fuel line and not the tank that is leaking and you should be back riding in no time.

Appears to be a fuel line or the fuel pump.  It's actually under the seat.  When I get home from this trip I am looking to pull the fuel pump cover and check.  The I can call the shop.

The shop on my end was not much of a help and they stated that they are about two weeks out in their work.  With that said, I am so glad that I went ahead and tackled the issue myself.  If you decide to do it yourself, I am sure you are familiar of Partzilla for parts.  That is where I got my parts and shipping is fast.  At the end of the day, I think I saved myself a couple hundred dollars or perhaps more by fixing this myself.  Best of luck on your troubleshooting part.
